  • What Is The "IT" Factor and How Do We Get More of "IT"

On this episode I take a deeper look at what it means to have "IT". We hear that all the time from coaches, commentators, parents, etc. and what do they actually mean when they say that player just has "IT".  What they're really trying to say is that the player performs exceptionally well and can handle adversity and struggle.  Does this mean that you must be born with the gift of having "IT".  I would argue that its both.  Some athletes are born with innate abilities that other athletes must work a bit harder to obtain.  But I believe that everyone can have "IT" by first being aware of what they want to work on and then going out and doing it.  The foundation for doing this is believing in yourself first and foremost.

  • Focus Before, During and After Competition

As a goalkeeper you should be preparing MENTALLY for every training session, tryout, and game before you show up to the pitch to perform physically.  Sit with yourself and start training your mind to be focused on the game and your upcoming performance.  During the game it is crucial that you remain hyper focused throughout the entirety of the competition and ready to deal with any situations that come your way.

  • Fail Upwards

The concept of failing upwards is about have the perspective that it is perfectly ok to make mistakes because you will utilize the opportunity to improve.  Because you have made a mistake, that should now be a trigger to analyze the mistake and then take the proper steps towards improving and minimizing making that mistake again.  Goalkeepers need to use training as the opportunity to fail constantly so they can maximize their potential.

  • Take Ownership of Your Results

As a goalkeeper you must take full responsibility for the results of your performance.  Be self aware of how your preparation and training affects your results during games.  Also recognize that the result of winning and losing isn't the only thing you should be focused on.  Take into account the personal wins and losses of your performance so that you can take ownership of your own results.

  • Committing to Commitment Within The Game

You've already made the commitment to be a goalkeeper, but that is only half the battle. Now you must commit to all of the decisions that you have to make during competition.  Whether its committing to go out for a cross outside of your 6 yard box or holding your position in a 1v1 situation, you must commit 100% whether you're right or wrong! By making the wrong decisions and committing to them, you will be able to self evaluate and learn from those mistakes.  You must be committed to commitment in every facet of the game.

  • You Don't Need a Coach to Train and Get Better

In today's world of goalkeeping, training 2 or 3 times a week just isn't going to cut it.  If you truly want to reach you goals and play at the next level, then you need to work harder than everyone else.  Utilizing days off from team/gk training is critical to developing your skills and abilities.  There's no excuses to not always working on getting better.  So grab some cones, a few soccer balls and head to the local park.  Do it NOW.

  • I Wish I Was A Little Bit Taller...

Today I talk about another cardinal sin of goalkeeping and that is listening to coaches when they say you're not tall enough.  NEVER listen to them, they do not dictate your path as a goalkeeper.  If they present a roadblock to you, go somewhere else.  That's what I had to learn and did.  I'm so thankful to my younger self for not listening to the coach who said I was simply not tall enough to play at that level.

  • Why Do You Play The Game?

For this episode I am asking you to ask yourself some tough questions.  Once you have the answers of why you play the game and why you are a goalkeeper, you will begin to play without external pressure.  One of the cardinal sins of goalkeeping is playing for everyone but yourself.  Be aware of why you step onto the field.

  • How To Time The Game Using Mental Visualization

On today's episode I go in depth on utilizing the mental concept of mental visualization to prepare for competition.  More specifically, to use mental visualization to time your movements and actions that you would perform during a game or training.  This practice is training your mind to perform the movements without actually having to physically do them.  It is crucial when using this concept to visualize your movements at game speed and repeat them over and over to help them become 2nd nature in your mind.
