  • Episode 28: Elders, Dragons, and Highlanders (?)

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome to the Goblin Lore Podcast!

In our twenty-eighth episode, your friendly neighborhood goblins drill down on the "Elder" creature type that has been used more frequently on cards in the last few years and try to figure out if it just means those creatures are old or if Alex and Joe should be treating Hobbes with more respect.

We discuss the Elder Dragons of Dominaria and Tarkir, the Elder Dinosaurs of Ixalan, and the Elder Demon Belzenlok, as well as a notable dragon who doesn't get the title in his newest reprint, and how to deal with honorifics and status in society.

  • Episode 26: The Laughing Academy with Mike Lawton

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome to the Goblin Lore Podcast!

In our twenty-sixth episode, Milwaukee Public Schools teacher Mike Lawton joins Hobbes, Alex, and Joe to discuss the education systems that exist in the Magic: the Gathering Multiverse and explain how he brings Magic to his students in the form of a high school gaming club. The guys discuss social-emotional development, how to get someone interested in playing the game, and what it means for young people to have representation in the media they consume.

This episode touches on the lore topics of the Tolarian Academies, Urza Planeswalker and Barrin, as well as a bit of minor speculation on other systems of education in the Multiverse.

  • Episode 25: Goblin Games – Swords to Plowshares vs. U.S.S. Milwaukee

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome to the Goblin Lore Podcast!

In our twenty-fifth episode, Alex and Joe riff on a card from Magic: the Gathering's original set – Alpha – and draw parallels between it and something completely unrelated. Can the boys survive an Iron Chef-like secret ingredient showdown... with themselves?

This episode, we decided to talk about Swords to Plowshares and how it relates to a U.S. Civil War battleship, the U.S.S. Milwaukee. Alex introduces the card and how it came to be, while Joe dredges up some river-related history to go with this card.

  • Episode 24: Cultural Risks of Rabiah

Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome to the Goblin Lore Podcast!

In our twenty-fourth episode, Alex and Joe talk about the Magic: the Gathering world of Rabiah, the setting of the expansion set Arabian Nights and based on the real-life folktales of The 1,001 Arabian Nights. They discuss how Magic has handled sets drawing upon real-world cultures throughout its history, and both the risks and rewards of drawing inspiration from cultures of real people.

Magic content creator Shivam Bhatt's blog post on his response to the creative design of the Kaladesh expansion also forms a strong lived experiential counterpoint to Alex and Joe's perspectives, and you can find it here.
