If I really believe that God is real and that He rewards those who seek Him, and that His reward must be far greater than any reward I can get elsewhere, then I will not be tempted to do things to impress other people to get a reward from them. The more we know about God, the more we want to please Him, and the more everything else begins to fall into place.

People don't go around saying, "I'm living under the reign of sin." That's not how people compute their experience; it's not obvious to them. Paul is saying that God has a tool for making it obvious, and that tool is the law.

Everyone, Christian or not, has a gospel. We have a truth that we tell ourselves about what we think is the truth about reality. But we need our belief about who Jesus is to be shaped not by what we think or feel, but only by the truth.

"Therefore you must be perfect." That's a lot of pressure! We need to hear clearly what Jesus is saying here, and what he's not saying, and then we'll be better equipped to follow his moral advice as well as come to him for the forgiveness we need when we fail.
