Acts 18:18-23 ESV
18 After this, Paul stayed many days longer and then took leave of the brothers and set sail for Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila. At Cenchreae he had cut his hair, for he was under a vow. 19 And they came to Ephesus, and he left them there, but he himself went into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. 20 When they asked him to stay for a longer period, he declined. 21 But on taking leave of them he said, “I will return to you if God wills,” and he set sail from Ephesus.
22 When he had landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church, and then went down to Antioch. 23 After spending some time there, he departed and went from one place to the next through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.
LEARNING TO SAY NO
Paul wanted to preach in the synagogue at Corinth. But, the people drove him away. But at Ephesus, the Jews wanted for him to stay longer. But, he declined. Why? He was functioning according to God’s will implied by his farewell words, “I will return to you if God wills.” He left Ephesus, strengthening the disciples in the churches of Galatia and Prygia, on his way back to Antioch, Syria.
Notedly, he did not leave Ephesus if not for Aquila and Priscilla. In short, Paul didn’t feel indespensable. He believed the couple could do a better job without him. Paul wasn’t just leaving Ephesus irresponsibly.
How do our lives function and operate? Are we pursuing His will. Solomon says;
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.”[Prov 3:5,6]
We must neither be governed by our impulses nor by the urges of man. Our ‘steps and stops’ are ordered by the Lord. [Psa 37:23] Let’s not forget that we could not and are not expected to do everything. But, we can do something. Thus, we must focus on that something that is of utmost priority.[Rom 12:1,2] If it’s the will of God, it’s the most important. Though, the world may look at it as insignificant or irrelevant.
Therefore, let’s learn only to say ‘Yes’ to Jesus. Let’s learn to say “No” to that which push us away from doing His will. Our joy must be anchored only in doing His will. We do chose only to obey God, don’t we? Hence, when we say “No” to people, it is for their best interest if it’s the will of God. Otherwise, we are doing a disservice to people and our lives. God won’t be glorified if were not in the center of His will even though outwardly our work seem to progress in the eyes of men. Let’s not de fooled. An object in motion may not necessarily mean progress.
