19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”
24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25 They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
At sinabi niya, “Hindi ako.”
John the Baptist’s ministry had caught attention to the religious leaders, particularly the priests and the Levites. Definitely, his preaching of repentance and baptism were intriguing, if not threatening to them. They were beyond the norms of the religious system during that time. They couldn’t continue second guessing. It was best for them to know it from John the Baptist himself.
In many cases, the will of God is outside of the box. It may raise questions from others if we obey God for it is doing something out from the mold. Nevertheless, like John the Baptist, we must not be intimidated by what people think but be focused in fulfilling His will. Moreover, we should not cringe when we are compared with others, which is the natural tendency of people.
He knew his role pretty well as he claimed, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”[see Isa 40:3] He is the ‘phone’ while Jesus is "The logos [the Word.]. Doesn’t the "voice" bring awareness of "the word," which people are expected to hear and respond? Thus, he was conditioning the people so that they will be ready to receive the Messiah. He was so self effacing to say “he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” For this Jesus said about his greatness, that is “I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” [Luke 7:28]
Jesus’ says that there could even be more than him should he is the least in the kingdom of God. John the Baptist is great but has not the monopoly of it. It is in his expendability that he exudes his greatness.
