10 And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the Lord, the priests in their vestments came forward with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the Lord, according to the directions of David king of Israel. 11 And they sang responsively, praising and giving thanks to the Lord,
for his steadfast love endures forever toward Israel.”
And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid. 12 But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers' houses, old men who had seen the first house, wept with a loud voice when they saw the foundation of this house being laid, though many shouted aloud for joy, 13 so that the people could not distinguish the sound of the joyful shout from the sound of the people's weeping, for the people shouted with a great shout, and the sound was heard far away.
As the builders had laid the foundations of the temple, the Levites worshipped and sang before the Lord delightedly, that was;
for his steadfast love endures forever toward Israel.”
They had realized that God’s love had not and would never runs out. As Jeremiah had pointed out;
“the Lord appeared to him[a] from far away.
I have loved you with an everlasting love;
therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.
Again I will build you, and you shall be built,
O virgin Israel!” [Jer 31:3,4]
Joy is a by-product of knowing God’s character and experiencing His favor. All the people in a spontaneous chorus shouted with great joy. Moreover, the old folks who had seen the first temple were weeping also loudly. They were young boys and girls when they were brought to Babylon yet the memories of the beauty of the first temple was still fresh in their mind. For the fact that they were going to see it again had brought them to so much emotion. Certainly, they wept for so much joy.
It was a bit frenzy. Both shoutings of joys and weeping were indistinguishable. It was so loud that those who are faraway heard it. It’s hard to conceal our joy, isn’t it? May our lives exude the joy in Christ that others will see and be attracted to Christ. A sour spirit doesn’t attract, does it?
Interestingly, the joy of a believer is his mark of strength. Nehemiah had said, “the joy of the Lord is your strength.” [Neh 8:10] Strong people [matured] are not easily irritated by the discomforts and inconveniences of life. As James said, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” [Jas 1:2-4].
Today, let’s muse to what Jesus has done at Calvary. Let’s savour in our minds His unfailing grace. “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.” This is the way we would breakthrough into worship and joy despite the gloomy circumstances we might be in today.
