1 Blessed are those whose way is blameless,

    who walk in the law of the LORD!

2 Blessed are those who keep his testimonies,

    who seek him with their whole heart,

3 who also do no wrong,

    but walk in his ways!

4 You have commanded your precepts

    to be kept diligently.

5 Oh that my ways may be steadfast

    in keeping your statutes!

6 Then I shall not be put to shame,

    having my eyes fixed on all your commandments.

7 I will praise you with an upright heart,

    when I learn your righteous rules.

8 I will keep your statutes;

    do not utterly forsake me!

9 How can a young man keep his way pure?

    By guarding it according to your word.

10 With my whole heart I seek you;

    let me not wander from your commandments!

11 I have stored up your word in my heart,

    that I might not sin against you.

12 Blessed are you, O LORD;

    teach me your statutes!

13 With my lips I declare

    all the rules of your mouth.

14 In the way of your testimonies I delight

    as much as in all riches.

15 I will meditate on your precepts

    and fix my eyes on your ways.

16 I will delight in your statutes;

    I will not forget your word.

YOUR WORD IS IN MY HEART

This is another of the alphabetical or acrostic Psalms. There are twenty-two parts, according to the number of letters in the Hebrew alphabet. Every part is composed of eight verses, and each verse begins with that letter of the alphabet considered. For example, the first eight verses have aleph prefixed;  the second eight is beth, and so are the rest. 

It is not easy to have any general analysis of this Psalm. It is enough to say that it expresses in general the privileges and happiness of those who observe the law of the Lord. That law is exhibited by various names and epithets tending to show its various excellences. And, earnest prayers are offered to God for wisdom to understand it, and for grace to observe it faithfully

The words which show that revelation that God had given to men, are generally reckoned to be the following: Testimonies, Commandments, Precepts, Word,  Law, Ways, Truth, Judgments,  Righteousness, Statutes. To these, some add the following: faithfulness, judgment and name.  But these are not used in the sense of the other ten words. It is observed that almost in every verse of this Psalm one or other of those ten words is used.

Like all other portions of Divine revelation, it is elegant in numerous synonyms. The author has beautifully expanded, diversified, and illustrated the same idea; presenting it to his readers at all possible points of view, rendering it pleasing, instructive, and impressive. 

This psalm probably is descriptive of David's state; his experiences, and affairs, during or under the captivity, were formed out of his notes and recollections.

This morning, we will focus on v.9 to v.11.

 9 How can a young man keep his way pure?

    By guarding it according to your word.

10 With my whole heart I seek you;

    let me not wander from your commandments!

11 I have stored up your word in my heart,

    that I might not sin against you.

The way for a young man to keep himself pure is by keeping God’s word. The word will keep us from wickedness if we store it in our hearts. The heart of the matter is the matter of the heart.

Please read the text: Psalm 118:1-29 (ESV)

HIS STEADFAST LOVE ENDURES FOREVER

Originally this song was apparently sung by a combination of the temple singers, the congregation and the king, to mark some great national occasion such as a victory in battle. The scene is set in the temple, where the royal procession enters the gates and moves to the altar (see v. 19,20,27).

The singers call Israel to worship, and the congregation responds with praise to God for his steadfast love (v.1-4). The king then recounts how, in answer to prayer, God saved him from his enemies (v.5-7). The people respond that God is worthy of people’s trust (v.8-9). The king describes the hopeless position he had been in, with enemies attacking him on every side, but with God’s help he overthrew them (v.10-14). The people respond that God is all-powerful (v.15-16).

After expressing his confidence in God and his gratitude for God’s chastening, the king commands that the temple gates be opened to him (v.17-19). The gatekeepers open the gates, but they add the reminder that only the righteous can enter God’s temple (v.20). The king responds by thanking God for his righteous salvation, for this alone enables him to enter God’s presence (v.21).

The people then sing their rejoicings. When the king had been on the edge of embarassing defeat, he seemed like a useless stone that the builders had thrown away in disgust. Now, with his triumph, the same stone seems to have been brought back and made as the chief cornerstone, giving perfection and character to the building (v.22-25).

From the altar in the temple courtyard, the priests sing their welcome as the worshippers, in procession and waving branches of palm trees, draw near. The palm branches give the appearance of binding the worshippers together as they surround the altar in preparation for the sacrifice (v.26-27). Before the sacrificial ceremony commences, the king, followed by the congregation, offers a final thanksgiving (v.28-29).

Text: Psalm 117:1-2 (ESV)

1 Praise the LORD, all nations!

Extol him, all peoples!

2 For great is his steadfast love toward us,

and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever.

Praise the LORD!

GREAT IS HIS STEADFAST LOVE

This is the shortest psalm but loaded with great truth. It’s a recognition of God’s loyal love to Israel. And, this should cause his people to spread the good news of His love to other nations. And consequently, will cause the people of those nations to bring their praise to him (V.1-2).

God’s love is great towards us. It’s steadfast, meaning it won’t change and fade away. His love isn’t dependent on our goodness. It flows from His nature of love. God is love. The nation of Israel was unfaithful in many instances. Did God abandon them? He chastened them as a father does to his children.

His steadfast love prompts them to testify and glorify God. When our hearts are full, our mouth speaks. May, as His children, we will praise and glorify Him unashamedly in this world. God should be known in and through His redeemed people.

Text: Psa 116:1-19 ESV

I LOVE THE LORD!

This psalm is about an individual worshipper bringing a sacrifice to God to pay his vows and offer thanks (v. 17-19).

17 I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the LORD.

18 I will pay my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people,

19 in the courts of the house of the LORD, in your midst, O Jerusalem. Praise the LORD!

However, prior his offering of sacrifice, he pauses to muse on the great mercy and love of God. As he does so, he finds that his own love towards God increases, particularly when he recalls how God has answered his prayers and saved his life (v.1-4).

1 I love the LORD, because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy.

2 Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live.

3 The snares of death encompassed me; the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me; I suffered distress and anguish.

4 Then I called on the name of the LORD: “O LORD, I pray, deliver my soul!”

He has personally experienced God’s compassion and goodness (v.5-7).

5 Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; our God is merciful.

6 The LORD preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me.

7 Return, O my soul, to your rest; for the LORD has dealt bountifully with you.

When he was unable to help himself and when so-called friends proved useless, he still trusted God. He prayed, and God gave him new life (v.8-11).

8 For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling;

9 I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.

10 I believed, even when I spoke: “I am greatly afflicted”;

11 I said in my alarm, “All mankind are liars.”

Then, He openly thank God by offering prayers and sacrifices in fulfillment of his vow (v.12-14).

12 What shall I render to the LORD for all his benefits to me?

13 I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD,

14 I will pay my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people.

He sees how highly God values the life of the believer. Yet, God does not allow him to die [v.16]. The death of His people is precious in God’s sight. The writer recognizes that God preserves him alive, and for this, he offers overflowing thanks (v.15-19).

15 Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.

16 O LORD, I am your servant; I am your servant, the son of your maidservant. You have loosed my bonds.

17 I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the LORD.

18 I will pay my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people,

19 in the courts of the house of the LORD, in your midst, O Jerusalem. Praise the LORD!

Text: Psalm 115:1-18 ESV

1 Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!

2 Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?”

3 Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.

4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands.

5 They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see.

6 They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell.

7 They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in their throat.

8 Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them.

9 O Israel, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield.

10 O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield.

11 You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield.

12 The LORD has remembered us; he will bless us; he will bless the house of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron;

13 he will bless those who fear the LORD, both the small and the great.

14 May the LORD give you increase, you and your children!

15 May you be blessed by the LORD, who made heaven and earth!

16 The heavens are the LORD's heavens, but the earth he has given to the children of man.

17 The dead do not praise the LORD, nor do any who go down into silence.

18 But we will bless the LORD from this time forth and forevermore. Praise the LORD!

Psa 115:1-18 ESV

TRUST AND SERVE THE LORD!

The Israelites have been unfaithful to him. Despite of this, God was always faithful to them. The psalmist highlighted that their sins have brought God’s punishment upon them. Thus, it caused their pagan neighbours to mock them with the accusation that their God was unable to help them but has deserted them.[v.1,2]

1 Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!

2 Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?”

The truth is that their God is alive and in full control. He is in the heavens! In contrast, their pagan gods are useless. Why? They are lifeless. And worse, those who trust in them will achieve nothing like their idols that couldn’t move, hear and see (v.3-8).

3 Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.

4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands.

5 They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see.

6 They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell.

7 They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in their throat.

8 Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them.

Therefore, Israel has to trust in God for help and protection alone (v.9-11).

9 O Israel, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield.

10 O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield.

11 You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield.

God will surely bless them and their descendants, for He is the almighty Creator (v.12-15).

12 The LORD has remembered us; he will bless us; he will bless the house of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron;

13 he will bless those who fear the LORD, both the small and the great.

14 May the LORD give you increase, you and your children!

15 May you be blessed by the LORD, who made heaven and earth!

Moreover, God is good to mankind. he has given the earth to men as a dwelling place. But, He has limited the number of years that each person may live on it. Therefore, God’s people should make sure that they fill their few short years with praise and service to him (v.16-18).

16 The heavens are the LORD's heavens, but the earth he has given to the children of man.

17 The dead do not praise the LORD, nor do any who go down into silence.

18 But we will bless the LORD from this time forth and forevermore. Praise the LORD!

God’s Word for Today

When Israel went out from Egypt,

    the house of Jacob from a people of strange language,

2 Judah became his sanctuary,

    Israel his dominion.

3 The sea looked and fled;

    Jordan turned back.

4 The mountains skipped like rams,

    the hills like lambs.

5 What ails you, O sea, that you flee?

    O Jordan, that you turn back?

6 O mountains, that you skip like rams?

    O hills, like lambs?

7 Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,

    at the presence of the God of Jacob,

8 who turns the rock into a pool of water,

    the flint into a spring of water.

-Psa 114:1-8 ESV

THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD 

This psalm highlights the events marking the Jewish deliverance from slavery in Egypt as acts of God’s mercies. God released his people and gave them new life by dwelling among them (v.1-2). 

When Israel went out from Egypt,

    the house of Jacob from a people of strange language,

2 Judah became his sanctuary,

    Israel his dominion.

God’s miraculous acts include dividing the Red Sea, stopping the flow of the Jordan River and an earthquake on Mount Sinai (v.3-4).

3 The sea looked and fled;

    Jordan turned back.

4 The mountains skipped like rams,

    the hills like lambs.

This was the work of God alone. He rescued them from their hopeless situation in Egypt. But,  He also looked after them throughout their journey to Canaan (v.5-8).

5 What ails you, O sea, that you flee?

    O Jordan, that you turn back?

6 O mountains, that you skip like rams?

    O hills, like lambs?

7 Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,

    at the presence of the God of Jacob,

8 who turns the rock into a pool of water,

    the flint into a spring of water.

Apparently, the metaphorical references refer to the wonders that occurred at Sinai where God delivered to Israel the Decalogue, ratified with them the covenant, and gave instructions for the construction of the tabernacle. Why the mountains skipped? the little hills frolicked like lambs? the Red Sea fled before Israel? and why the Jordan river at flood stage suddenly presented Israel with a dry-land crossing? Who turned the rock into a pool of water? It was all due to the presence of God. All nature obeys His voice. He spoke, and great wonders ensued.

Where God is miracles happen. God’s presence is our assurance. [Mat 28:18-20, Heb 13:5,6]

Praise the LORD!

Praise, O servants of the LORD,

    praise the name of the LORD!

2 Blessed be the name of the LORD

    from this time forth and forevermore!

3 From the rising of the sun to its setting,

    the name of the LORD is to be praised!

4 The LORD is high above all nations,

    and his glory above the heavens!

5 Who is like the LORD our God,

    who is seated on high,

6 who looks far down

    on the heavens and the earth?

7 He raises the poor from the dust

    and lifts the needy from the ash heap,

8 to make them sit with princes,

    with the princes of his people.

9 He gives the barren woman a home,

    making her the joyous mother of children.

Praise the LORD!

WHO IS LIKE THE LORD OUR GOD 

Psalms 113 to 118 form a collection called the Hallel. Israelites sang the Hallel at various annual festivals, the most important of which was the Passover. They sang Psalms 113 and 114 before eating the meal, and Psalms 115 to 118 after the meal (cf. Mat 26:30).

This introductory psalm of the Hallel urges us to praise Him. The phrase ‘Praise the Lord’ is repeated 3x  in v. 1 for emphasis sake. 

Praise the LORD!

Praise, O servants of the LORD,

    praise the name of the LORD!

Praising the Lord is appropriate because of Hs sovereignty. Verses 2 to 4 express the extent of His sovereignty.

2 Blessed be the name of the LORD

    from this time forth and forevermore!

3 From the rising of the sun to its setting,

    the name of the LORD is to be praised!

4 The LORD is high above all nations,

    and his glory above the heavens!

It is praising God for His absolute sovereignty over all things! [ see Rom 11:36]

The Lord is enthroned on High[Psa 11:4,103:13] yet He humbles Himself to identify with His people and their neeed.

5 Who is like the LORD our God,

    who is seated on high,

6 who looks far down

    on the heavens and the earth?

He gives favor to man, lifting him from his lowest to honor him. The psalmist uses the metaphor of dust, ashes and barrenness.[v.7-9]

7 He raises the poor from the dust

    and lifts the needy from the ash heap,

8 to make them sit with princes,

    with the princes of his people.

9 He gives the barren woman a home,

    making her the joyous mother of children.

Praise the LORD!

From the most destitute state as dust and heap of ashes , He makes His own people sit with princess. Moreover, the tragic state of woman’s barrenness, He shows kindness for her to become a joyful mother. This favor is unmerited as our salvation is. The reason why we exalt God – Praise the Lord!

Text: Psalm 112:1-10 (ESV)

1 Praise the LORD!

Blessed is the man who fears the LORD,

who greatly delights in his commandments!

2 His offspring will be mighty in the land;

the generation of the upright will be blessed.

3 Wealth and riches are in his house,

and his righteousness endures forever.

4 Light dawns in the darkness for the upright;

he is gracious, merciful, and righteous.

5 It is well with the man who deals generously and lends;

who conducts his affairs with justice.

6 For the righteous will never be moved;

he will be remembered forever.

7 He is not afraid of bad news;

his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD.

8 His heart is steady; he will not be afraid,

until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.

9 He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor;

his righteousness endures forever;

his horn is exalted in honor.

10 The wicked man sees it and is angry;

he gnashes his teeth and melts away;

the desire of the wicked will perish!

BLESSED IS THE MAN WHO FEARS THE LORD

It should be noted that both Psalms 111 and 112 are equal in length and similar in form, so that they can be read as a pair, and are acrostics. While Psalm 112 considers the greatness of God, Pa 112 considers the character of His godly people.

When people respond to God in such a reverential way, God blesses them with a respected, upright, and prosperous line of descendants (v.1-3).

Praise the LORD!

Blessed is the man who fears the LORD,

Blessed people become a blessing. They share. God commends those who are just in their treatment of others, even generous with their resources(v.4-6).

4 Light dawns in the darkness for the upright;

he is gracious, merciful, and righteous.

5 It is well with the man who deals generously and lends;

who conducts his affairs with justice.

6 For the righteous will never be moved;

he will be remembered forever.

They are also stable. Their lives will be enriched with a sense of security and confidence so that they fear nothing (v.7-8).

7 He is not afraid of bad news;

his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD.

8 His heart is steady; he will not be afraid,

until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.

There is a sense of satisfaction that comes from such lives which is in sharp contrast to the wicked, who are envious and hopeless. (v.9-10).

9 He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor;

his righteousness endures forever;

his horn is exalted in honor.

10 The wicked man sees it and is angry;

he gnashes his teeth and melts away;

the desire of the wicked will perish!

studied by all who delight in them.

3 Full of splendor and majesty is his work,

and his righteousness endures forever.

4 He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered;

the LORD is gracious and merciful.

5 He provides food for those who fear him;

he remembers his covenant forever.

6 He has shown his people the power of his works,

in giving them the inheritance of the nations.

7 The works of his hands are faithful and just;

all his precepts are trustworthy;

8 they are established forever and ever,

to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.

9 He sent redemption to his people;

he has commanded his covenant forever.

Holy and awesome is his name!

10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;

all those who practice it have a good understanding.

His praise endures forever!

GREAT ARE THE WORKS OF THE LORD

Psalms 111 and 112 are equal in length and similar in form so that they can be read as a pair. Both are acrostics (see note preceding Psalms 9:0). However, there is a difference in emphasis. Psalm 112 considers the greatness of God, while Pa 112 on the character of His godly people.

God’s wonderful works, both in the creation and in history, are reasons for praise by all his worshipping people, privately and publicly (v.1-3).

Praise the LORD!

I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart,

In his sovereign power, He took the productive land of Canaan from its heathen inhabitants and gave it to the Israelite people according to the covenant he had made with them (v.4-6).

4 He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered;

the LORD is gracious and merciful.

5 He provides food for those who fear him;

he remembers his covenant forever.

6 He has shown his people the power of his works,

in giving them the inheritance of the nations.

His desire is that they rule themselves according to his just law (v.7-8).

7 The works of his hands are faithful and just;

all his precepts are trustworthy;

8 they are established forever and ever,

to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.

He is the mighty and holy covenant-redeemer of his people, as he promised to Abraham. And they should fear him, honour him, obey him and praise him (v.9-10).

9 He sent redemption to his people;

he has commanded his covenant forever.

Holy and awesome is his name!

10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;

all those who practice it have a good understanding.

His praise endures forever!

His redemption should prompt exaltation. And those who worship God will grow in wisdom and understanding. And the wiser they become, the more able they are to do or obey His commandments.

Text: Psalm 110:1-7 ESV

1 The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”

2 The LORD sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies!

3 Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours.

4 The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”

5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.

6 He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth.

7 He will drink from the brook by the way; therefore he will lift up his head.

-Psa 110:1-7 ESV

JESUS AND MELCHIZEDEK

This is evidently a more prominent Messianic psalm than the other chapters. Here, there are 9 citations in the New Testament with reference to the Messiah, only to be surpassed by Psa 118, where there are 11 citations. It has three units of thought, each describing the Messianic king.

Firstly, He is the divine King [v.1-3]

Secondly, He is the eternal priest after the order of Melchizedek.[V.4]

And third and last, he is the victorious warrior.[v.4-7]

The focal point in this psalm is the Messiah’s role of priesthood after Melchizedek. Who was Melchizedek? He was priest-king of the Canaanite city-state of Salem, later known as Jerusalem. He was a man so pure and upright that he was called king of peace, king of righteousness and priest of the Most High God (Heb 7:1-10). He first appears in the biblical record when he met and blessed Abraham, who was returning after a victory over some raiders. Abraham refused to take any reward from those who benefited from the victory, but instead made offerings to God’s priest. In this way he recognized that God was the sovereign ruler in human affairs (Gen 14:1-24).

When David conquered Jerusalem and set up his throne there, he became heir to Melchizedek as Jerusalem’s ideal priest-king. (The Melchizedek kind of priesthood was distinct from the Aaronic kind of priesthood.) notedly as God’s representative, David also was to be king of peace, king of righteousness and priest of the Most High God. It seems that David wrote this psalm to be sung by the temple singers to celebrate the establishment of his throne in Jerusalem (2 Sam 5:6-12).

To David it seems that, with his conquest of Jerusalem, God has given him victory over all his enemies and invited him to sit in the place of supreme power (1). From Mount Zion in Jerusalem, David rules his people and conquers his foes (2). The people willingly offer themselves to the king for his service in spreading his rule throughout the land. An army of young men with the life-giving freshness of dew and the strength of youth present themselves to the king (3). Just as the authority of Melchizedek, God’s representative, had no historical or national limits, so David’s authority in the name of God is limitless, in time and extent (4). God will lead his king to universal conquest and rule (5-6). He will refresh him by renewing his vigour continually, till he stands victorious, master of all (7).

It is evident as we read the psalm that David was but a very faint representation of the universal priest-king. The Jews in later times interpreted the psalm as applying to the Messiah. And Jesus confirmed their correct application (Mat 22:42-45; Mat 26:64; Acts 2:34-35; Heb 1:3, 13). The Melchizedek’s priesthood that David inherited was in name only, a mere title to add to the other titles held by the Israelite king. Jesus Christ’s priesthood after the order of Melchizedek is complete and never-ending fulfilment(Heb 5:6; Heb 7:1-28). His final conquest and royal rule will be final and universal (1 Cor 15:24-25; Rev 19:11-6).
