LET GOD BE TRUE THOUGH EVERY ONE WERE A LIAR

Previously, Paul has expressed that there is no difference between Jews and Gentiles. All have broken the law and are equally guilty. So, is there any advantage to being included in the Jewish people and being circumcised, as God has commanded?

Definitely, it’s yes. Firstly, they were entrusted with the "oracles of God." In short, the Jewish people were given the enormous privilege of receiving and handing down the very words of God to all people. His point here was simply that their Jewishness itself, would not keep any person from answering to God's judgment for his or her sin. More of the benefits are listed in Romans 9:1–5.

Now, Paul is unpacking a question-and-answer session between himself and an imagined critic of his words. He asked, “What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God?” They were given God's law, but they did not keep it. Collectively as a nation and as individuals, every Jew had sinned.

Now that they sinned, does this nullify God’s faithfulness? Does this mean that God will no longer be faithful to them? Paul answered a resounding, “By no means!” Why? God's faithfulness does not depend on human faithfulness. The quotation, "God will be true even if every man is a liar" may come from Psalm 116:11. In other words, God always keeps His word and remains faithful to His people regardless to what they do. Hence, His words and judgments are justified. He would never break His part of any covenant agreement. Moreover, Paul quotes directly from Psalm 51:4 to describe this aspect of God's faithful character: "That you may be justified in your words, and prevail when you are judged."

Furthermore, Paul asks, " But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.) [v.5,6] Put this in another way, "If our being bad makes God look good, why is God angry with us? He is arguing from a human standpoint as he said it in parenthesis.

Again, he was emphatic that this is not so. He argued, “By no means! For then how could God judge the world?” Paul logically asked, "How could God judge the world if He were in any way unrighteous?" God's role is the overall judge of mankind. And this requires that God be above judgment Himself by being perfect in His righteousness. It should be noted clearly that God is the only standard of justice, is He not?

Another question Paul asked is “But if through my lie God's truth abounds to his glory, why am I still being condemned as a sinner? And why not do evil that good may come? That is, if our sin like lying brings glory to Him, in a sense, should He really condemn us for it? So, it’s better to continue to lie or do evil for it promotes God’s glory!

Because God remains faithful even when we do not, they slandered Paul saying that he is telling people to keep sinning. Clearly, there is a deliberate, dishonest lie meant to damage his reputation and his efforts. This accusation that the gospel of grace implies a license to sin is one Paul will address later, particularly in chapter 6:1, where Paul asks,” What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?" Hence, they are slanderous and their condemnation is just."[v.8] In other words, they have earned God's wrath.

25 For circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision. 26 So, if a man who is uncircumcised keeps the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? 27 Then he who is physically uncircumcised but keeps the law will condemn you who have the written code and circumcision but break the law. 28 For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. 29 But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God

A MATTER OF THE HEART, BY THE SPIRIT, NOT BY THE LETTER

Another mindset of the Jews is their Abrahamic heritage because of the rite of circumcision. Does being circumcised, in obedience to God's command to Abraham and his descendants ensure that they would be identified as God's people? (Gen 17:9–10) Unfortunately, many of them believed that they would not be judged by God even if they broke His law. The ritual was enough to establish their salvation according to them. 

Paul did not dispute the importance of circumcision for the Jews. But, it becomes worthless if they’re breaking and not practicing the law. Those being circumcised are no better than those who are not circumcised. These words should be a shock to religious Jews who always believed they were saved through circumcision and by it belonged to God's chosen people. 

As an application, Paul challenged this attitude of anyone who thinks that religious rituals, ceremonies, or other sacraments can overcome the stain of sin. Nobody can be saved a certain rituals and ceremonies.

Paul goes even further to say, “And if the Gentiles obey God’s law, won’t God declare them to be his own people?”[v.26, NLT] This could have infuriated the Jews. His lack of physical circumcision won't prevent him from being regarded by God as one who is circumcised, would it be? 

Everything comes down to whether a person keeps God's law or not, whether one is Jewish or Gentile. But, the truth is nobody could keep it.[Rom 3:10,23] Paul even has gone on to say that the Gentile law-keeper will condemn the Jewish law-breaker, even though he has been given the law by God and has been circumcised! 

Paul further argues that their Jewishness by race and religion is nothing if they are not obedient to the law. Who then is a real Jew?  It's not about being born Jewish or even being physically circumcised. True Jewishness, Paul emphasizes that it is about the state of a person's heart before God. He said, “A Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God.

Today, as we reflect on this truth, we ask. Are we Christians by heart or by religion only.

17 But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and boast in God 18 and know his will and approve what is excellent, because you are instructed from the law; 19 and if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— 21 you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal? 22 You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who boast in the law dishonor God by breaking the law. 24 For, as it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”

PRIVILEGE AND RESPONSIBILITY

Here, Paul addressed this discourse to people who proudly called themselves Jews. How good is it to be Jewish back then?  First, he who recognizes himself as a Jew is a member of the nation of Israel, God's chosen people (Deut 7:6). It is a high honor. Secondly, such a person may "rely on the law." The law alone given to them is loaded with promises of blessings.  Yet, it was also a gift. It is the revelation of God's standards for how to live on earth.  Thirdly, a Jew who relies on the law, can also "boast in God." Paul is not advocating selfish bragging. But, the Jewish people could rightly boast that the one true God was their God and they were His people. 

Thus, they become custodian and proclaimers of the truth or law. As Paul said, “and if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth.”

Hence, the onus is upon them to prove to others by following the law themselves. Paul, then asks rhetorical questions. “you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal? You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who boast in the law dishonor God by breaking the law.”[v.21-23] He is asking that if all these things are true for Jewish people, why don't they live according to the law?

In every privilege, there is a corresponding responsibility. Adam and Eve were privileged to live in the garden but had the responsibility to obey God. Likewise, the Jews who were privileged to hear the law must model themselves by obeying it. 

How many of us are privileged to be raised in Christian homes. Sadly, many assumed that God’s favor was upon them because of their Christian parents and upbringing in the church. They regularly go to church and activities but no changes are seen in their lives. They know so much about God and the bible but do little to apply it. They can talk but not walk the truth. The walk is more important than the talk. Why would any self-righteous person actually think God would ignore their sin? Familiarity breeds contempt.

Why would these Jews think they were exempt from God's wrath when they did not keep the law He gave to them? Because of their inconsistency, they stumble the Gentiles. As Paul said, “For, as it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”[v.24] In the same manner, how many are turned off by church people who can preach the gospel but are not living according to their claims.

Text: Romans 2:12-16 (ESV)

12 For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature, do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them 16 on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

GOD JUDGES THE SECRETS OF MEN BY CHRIST JESUS

Paul has identified two categories of sinful people with respect to the law, namely: those who sinned under the law and those who sinned without the law. Those who sinned under the law do so because they heard the law but did not do the law. [V.13] These Jewish hearers might have thought that hearing the law was enough to make them righteous. Most Jews grew up listening to the books of the Law read aloud from the time they were very young. Does intellectual knowledge of the law make them righteous? No. not at all! It’s obedience to the law that makes one righteous, which nobody is able to do perfectly.

The Gentiles, however, are ignorant of the law. Nevertheless, they are also called sinners ‘without the law’, that is, having no awareness of the written law. However, they have the law written in their hearts. The human conscience in many cases prompts people to "do the right thing" even without the written law to tell them to do it. As a default through nature, they are a law to themselves. This brings us back to Paul's point in Rom 1:18-20 earlier that God makes certain His existence and creation are obvious to all. Nobody is excused.

Is Paul suggesting that a Gentile who lives according to his conscience will be declared righteous by God? Of course not! His emphasis, as implied here, is only that such a person is following some kind of minimum standard for right and wrong. God who gave the law also built into the heart of all a sense of what is right and wrong - the human conscience. It condemns us when we do wrong and defends us when we do right. It’s not a perfect standard though because it can be either softened or hardened. Thus, Paul mentions about "conflicting thoughts," as the conscience talks to us about the varied and relative choices of morality.

Whether a Jew or a Gentile, each one falls short of God's standard of perfection (Rom 3:9–10). Eventually, Paul refers to the day when God will judge the "secrets of men by Jesus Christ. Man’s conscience will stand as a witness in regard to what he has done, right or wrong. God's judgment of Gentiles, however, will be as fair and consistent as His judgment of Jews.

Sin is always sin, whether we have been given an explicit list or not, whether we are aware of it or not. May we have sensitivity to our sins.

Text: Romans 2:6-11 (ESV)

6 He will render to each one according to his works: 7 to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; 8 but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. 9 There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. 11 For God shows no partiality.

FOR GOD SHOWS NO PARTIALITY

Paul describes the difference between those who will receive wrath or reward from God in these verses. He cites from Psa 62:12 and Prov 24:12 to express the universal truth that God will repay to each person according to his works in verse 6.

Verse 7 does not mean that we will be saved by our good works. Paul seems to indicate here that God judges all people on the basis of their behavior. However, this is the same idea expressed by Jesus Himself in Mat 16:27, that is, “For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.” If we see this in terms of reward, this is absolutely right. Each person is judged on the basis of their deeds (Rom 14:10–12; 2 Cor 5:10).

In short, one’s works would show that a person is either righteous or not in the first place. However, Paul will show later in Romans 3 that none of us are able to live such a righteous life. If man is perfect, then, his works "would have" been able to save him. Absolutely, we are not and could not be perfect.

Here, Paul is building his case that God has no partiality to anyone[v.11]. “Those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek.” Unrighteous people receive God’s wrath and fury. Righteous people will receive glory and honor.

But, none of us are righteous. Thus, no one can hope to stand before God on our own merits and receive anything but the judgment we have earned with our sinfulness. Paul will make clear in this letter, that no one can be saved by their good deeds (Rom 3:23). Our only hope for salvation to rescue us from the penalty of our sin is Christ and His work at the cross. Salvation is by grace alone, through faith in Jesus Christ.[Eph 2:8,9]

4 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?

5 But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God's righteous judgment will be revealed.

WHY DOES GOD SHOWER US WITH GOODNESS?

All of us are sinners. Thus, all are deserving to receive His wrath and judgments. But, some moralists presume that they are exempted. Most probably, they were predominantly religious Jews [with few Gentile proselytes ] who assumed their special status with God. This attitude prompted them to be judgmental towards "sinful Gentiles" and were complacent towards their own sins.

This is presumptuousness, plain and simple.

These self-righteous sinners are presuming on or showing contempt for the riches of God's kindness, forbearance, and patience they received from God. Despite their pride and arrogance, God has been good to them. Sadly, the receiving of material blessings from God is interpreted as both a confirmation and approval of their self-righteousness. A presumptuous sinner may say something like this, “What I am doing is right and approved by God [although it is sinful based on God’s word] because God is blessing me with good health, riches, and other good things in this life.

God’s goodness and mercy are poured towards undeserving sinners as He sends both sunshine and rain to all. God’s kindness and patience should not be interpreted as His approval to our sins. Take for example; a tardy and irresponsible student to pass his papers late. His kind teacher has been patient and tolerated him at all times. Until one day, the teacher penalized him. His response wasn’t expected, as he is saying, “Sir, since my freshman until now I have passed all my subjects. You are so unkind to flunk me now that I am graduating.” What can you say about this guy?

Why God is patient and kind to the world? Why does He shower us with His goodness and delay His coming? Peter explains, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”[2 Pet 3:9]

Just because that God is good to us at this moment, should we assume that God is okay with our sins? Definitely not! It is a fatal and dangerous presumption, is it not? Life is a privilege, not an entitlement. God's kindness today is meant to lead us to repent or turn away from our sin, and not to continue in it. In fact, those who refuse to repent from their sin are storing up God's wrath for themselves. God’s judgment is sure though it is slow. Someday, Jesus will come and God will express His anger on the "day of wrath," the day when His righteous judgment will be revealed.

As Peter said, “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.”[2 Pet 3:10]

Instead of presuming, we should be repenting. As Peter exhorted us, “ Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! But according to his promise, we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.”[2 Pet 3:11-13]

1 Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another, you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things.

2 We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things.

3 Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God?

YOU HAVE NO EXCUSE

Evidently, Paul has addressed his Jewish readers, who religiously followed the law of Moses. They may have imagined Paul's description in Romans 1 to have been directed to Gentile—non-Jewish—pagans and those they considered "sinners." There may even be Gentiles, who followed moral philosophies and imagined Paul's words as being meant for other ears.

Moralists may protest that they are not bad sinners as they pass judgment upon others. But Paul said, “For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things.”[v.1b]

These Jewish people think that following the law of Moses has made them right with God, and therefore free from His judgment. Paul anticipated this mindset. He knew many of his Jewish readers assumed that the list of sins and the resulting judgment of God did not apply to them. After all, they were God's special people. He would not condemn them. But they were wrong.[v.2]

They should not assume they are immune from God's judgment. Thus Paul asked, “Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God?”[v.3] For having been self-righteous, they are presuming on or showing contempt for the riches of God's kindness, forbearance, and patience. Aware of God's vast kindness, they have miscalculated that God won't ever judge their sin, even though He may judge the sins of others.

-Rom 1:24-32 ESV

GOD GAVE THEM UP

As God revealed His glory through creation, God also revealed His wrath to rebellious mankind. [v.18]. Consequently, man’s thinking becomes worthless, and his heart grows darkened towards worshipping idols. There is an impossibility to know of the only true God. God takes idol worship personally. The first two of his Ten Commandments to Israel are that they should have no other gods before him and not worship or serve any image of any created thing (Exod 20:3-6). However, man still longs to worship something.  And so, he creates images, like people and animals, to worship foolishly. In doing so, he’s thinking that he has become quite wise (Rom 1:22–23). Thus, God’s wrath is ‘fully disclosed’ against humanity for all ’suppress the truth in unrighteousness.’

In what ways?

God gave them up. This has been mentioned 3 times with different emphases each time. [v.24, 26 & 28] From verses 24-25, Paul’s reason has emphasized to our abandoning of the truth in order to embrace a lie. God who is “giving us up’ is "stepping away," in a sense. God removed the restraint for man to pursue the lusts of their hearts to impurity. The idea seems to be this, if we are pursuing to worship images of animals, God will permit us to live like animals in our relationships with each other.

From verses 26 to 28, Paul emphasizes the dishonorable or distasteful sexual perversions of mankind. Natural sexual relations [heterosexual relations thru marriage] are abandoned and are replaced with sexual perversions [same-sex sexual relations]. They are “consumed with passion”, so that they become shameless in their acts. Thus, they are receiving due penalty for their error.  

Paul moved on to summarize that God gave them up to their ‘debased mind’[v.29] Sadly, humankind by rejecting God became filled with all kinds of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, and malice. etc. Our desire to do wrong to get what we want has gone wild unchecked. From one degree to another, we are guilty of engaging in hurting others to get what we want. This leads us to be full of envy, murder, strife, deceitfulness, and maliciousness. We also gossip freely, an action the Bible always holds as a great evil. It is so ugly how sin has corrupted man’s heart, isn’t it?

Mankind does not do these things in total ignorance, does He? [see v.32]. Paul declares again that human beings, by nature, know these things are wrong. Even when we directly know that God has announced that those who practice this way deserve to die, we keep doing these things, anyway! Moreover, we also applaud other people who practice these sins.

Is there a way out of our part in all of this unrighteousness and back to God?

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

THE WRATH OF GOD IS REVEALED

The origin of God's wrath is heaven. It is coming from His essential nature and existence, not from some other creatures or circumstances. 

The reason?

God’s wrath is against human ungodliness and unrighteousness. Human beings, apart from God, express their unrighteousness, by suppressing and rebelling against the truth about God and for who He is.

God could be known because He reveals Himself through creation. The problem is not that truth is unavailable. But, the problem is that the truth is being suppressed. They don’t believe it because they do not want to. God reveals clearly but man rebels willfully. Verse 19 says, that in a plain way, God has revealed himself to those who deny and disobey Him. Their disobedience is not a result of ignorance, is it?  Apparently, It's caused by rebellion.

In what ways God has revealed?  

Paul asserts that human beings can easily know at least some things about God by looking at creation. We should look at what is visible around us in nature, and what God has made, and arrive at some obvious conclusions about what is not visible. Considering every aspect of creation, we should understand from nature that God has eternal power and a divine nature. David expressed similar truth in Psalm 19:1–6.

Does the world come into existence without a creator? Such a feat would require "eternal power," or endless and inexhaustible power. Such a Creator must also be divine and not merely human. He must be God, in other words. Human beings should look at creation and decide there must be a God who made it, a God we must answer to on some level.

Rejecting God as creator has its worst consequence. It leads to the hardening of hearts - a refusal to honor or give thanks to God. After all, why honor a God who did not make the world? And if God is not the creator, why would we assume that He is the provider of all we need? Why give thanks to God for what we believe we have developed and acquired for ourselves? This is foolish thinking. Psa 14:1 says, 

“The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”

    They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds;

    there is none who does good.

Let’s not be a fool by believing in God today.

Text: Romans 1:16-17 (ESV)

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

I AM NOT ASHAMED OF THE GOSPEL

The apostle Paul has the audacity to declare his pride in proclaiming the gospel. There is neither embarrassment nor fear in Paul’s heart to declare the gospel to others.

Why?

It is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. The gospel is the only message that brings salvation to all who believe. There is no other means. [Acts 4:12, John 14:6]

The key is faith. The righteousness of God is received by faith in Christ. Christ’s sacrifice is what makes us righteous. As Paul explains, “ For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”[2 Cor 5:21] When we believe in the gospel we will be declared righteous and reconciled, that is being at peace, with God. As Rom 5:1, says, “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

As one’s valued possession could be trash to another, the gospel is as stupidity to the unbelievers. As Paul declares, “We preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.”[1 Cor 1:23,24]
