And Job again took up his discourse, and said:
2 “Oh, that I were as in the months of old,
as in the days when God watched over me,
3 when his lamp shone upon my head,
and by his light I walked through darkness,
when the friendship of God was upon my tent,
5 when the Almighty was yet with me,
when my children were all around me,
6 when my steps were washed with butter,
and the rock poured out for me streams of oil!
7 When I went out to the gate of the city,
when I prepared my seat in the square,
21 “Men listened to me and waited
and kept silence for my counsel.
22 After I spoke they did not speak again,
and my word dropped upon them.
23 They waited for me as for the rain,
and they opened their mouths as for the spring rain.
24 I smiled on them when they had no confidence,
and the light of my face they did not cast down.
25 I chose their way and sat as chief,
and I lived like a king among his troops,
like one who comforts mourners.
WHEN THE ALMIGHTY WAS YET WITH ME
Job continued his adamant claim that he was upright enough, a reason for him not to
deserve his unjust sufferings. In this chapter, he recalled the blessed days in
the past when God had been with him.
He yearned for the return of his prosperous and happy times before the calamity
happened. A time wherein God watched him[v.2], in the light of God’s favor
[v.3], God was his friend [v.4-5a], having been surrounded by his ten children
[v.5], great prosperity [v.6] and his prestigious status and influence as a
As a result, he was respected by his peers. Even the nobles fell silent when hearing
him speak[v.8-11] He championed in showing justice and mercy to those in
need.[v12-16] He saw to it that help and justice were not turned away from his
door to anyone, even to people he did not know - strangers. [v.16b]. He
strongly opposed the wicked. He even rescued these helpless prey from the jaws
and teeth of their predators. As a result, people looked unto him for being a
ready helper as one ‘waiting for rain’[v.21]
He expected to continue with God’s blessing on him up to his death. He said,
‘Then I thought, ‘I shall die in my nest,
and I shall multiply my days as the sand,
19 my roots spread out to the waters,
with the dew all night on my branches,
20 my glory fresh with me,
and my bow ever new in my hand.’[v.17-20]
But, the unexpected testings happened. He lost all.
When everything was okay, the unexpected and inevitable happened to all. What does
it mean unto us today? We are not the ones crafting our destinies. God is.
Hence, if it happens, we must see to it that we can look back with no regrets.
That we may say, ‘There is no regret because I had not wasted my life on
something of no eternal value.’ If we do everything for God’s glory [1 Cor
10:31] then we expect He would honor us as well in His presence someday. Those
who honor God, He would honor.[1 Sam 2:30] ‘For God is not unjust so as to
overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the
saints, as you still do.’[ Heb 6:10]
