17 These are waterless springs and
mists driven by a storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been
reserved. 18 For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual
passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in
error. 19 They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of
corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved. 20 For if,
after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of
our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and
overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21 For it
would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness
than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them.
22 What the true proverb says has happened to them: “The dog returns to its own
vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.”
ENSLAVED
False teachers are con artists. They
enticed the gullible by promising them greater freeedom through unrestrained
passion. Subtly, they claimed to have better knowledge so that they ignore
biblical warnings about sexual sins. They boast that they could continue sinning
without remorse or consequence yet keep all the benefits of belonging to Christ
and the full approval of God. Immature Christians in particular are easily
swayed by these temptations.
But in reality, they are as ‘springs
without water’ As dried up spring, or a lurking raincloud that provides only a
bit of mist, their teaching will lead to disappointment, and eventually to
destruction. The term ‘gloom of utter darkness’ is likely a description of
They lived conflicting life. Why? They
promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity--for
'people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.' They claim that
"freedom" means doing whatever you want, whenever you want, and
however, you want. The ironical part is that ‘"For whatever overcomes a
person, to that, he is enslaved." They promise freedom they don't possess.
Instead of being free to indulge in their sexual passions, they simply cannot
do anything else. In short, they are slaves, mastered by their own sinful
desires. This is one of the most missed but essential truths about sin. Any
expression of freedom suggested by Satan is actually the very thing that
Let us keeep in mind that true freedom
is the ability to say no to ourselves, to leave the path of destruction, and to
say yes to Christ and find true joy, meaning, and abundant life (John 10:10).
Peter has refered himself as a slave [bond servant] of Jesus Christ. And ths
relationship freed him from the corruption the flesh demands.
Sadly, the false teachers are succssful
in enticing the gullible. These victims had heard and understood the gospel of
Jesus Christ. However, the Bible is very clear that intellectual knowledge is
not the same as saving faith (Jas 2:19). They are not true believers. As John
pointed out, “They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had
been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might
become plain that they all are not of us" (1 John 2:19). They became worse
than before. A condition wherein someone after the message has been heard and
rejected, or corrupted, it is very remote that someone would return again to
believe and trust in it. The description Peter used is something serious, that
is, “Of them the proverbs are true: 'A dog returns to its vomit,' and, 'A sow
that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.'
