Going Deutsch episodes

  • Duality of Mind

It's the last Going Deutsch before the first international break: Bayer Leverkusen's undefeated run in the Bundesliga ends after 35 games as Leipzig beat them 3-2, Heidenheim top the Bundesliga after a dominant 4-0 win over Augsburg, and Thomas Müller makes history in Bayern's 2-0 win over Freiburg. In the second tier: Elversberg's 4-0 win over Darmstadt sees Torsten Lieberknecht become the first managerial departure of the season, Hertha win a 4-3 thriller over Kaiserslautern, and Köln win 3-1 away at Schalke. Also on the pod: the last of the summer transfers, Mario Vuskovic, kit clash, and why I was in two frames of mind during Stuttgart's match against Mainz.

    2. Bundesliga kits can be found here. It turns out Four20 Pharma are in fact a medical marijuana company, which really should have been obvious to me when I was recording.

  • Hyperinflation

The Bundesliga is back on the Going Deutsch podcast! Julian Schuster becomes Alex's favourite manager as his Freiburg side win 3-1 against Stuttgart, Vincent Kompany has a rollercoaster debut in the league as Bayern win 3-2 against Wolfsburg, and Jamie Gittens scores two as Dortmund win on the opening day for the tenth season in a row. In the Zweite, a back-and-fourth game between Karlsruher and Elversberg sees the former win 3-2, HSV fans are in crisis as their side loses 1-0 to Hannover, and Düsseldorf score twice in as many minutes to win 2-1 away at Ulm. Also on the pod, which manager is very good at shouting, which player was dropped by their agent, a masterclass in passive-aggression, and why inflation has hit Fantasy Bundesliga.

This week's episode is dedicated to Christoph Daum and Sven-Göran Eriksson who both passed away this week. I hope you join me in sending your thoughts to the friends and families of both during this difficult time.

      • That's Classified

On this week's episode of Going Deutsch: the first round of the DFB Pokal sees Bundesliga side Bochum go out at the hands of Jahn Regensburg, fourth tier Kickers Offenbach defeat Magdeburg, and Dynamo Dresden go through against Fortuna Düsseldorf. Many Bundesliga sides get close to losing their spot in the competition: Hoffenheim, St. Pauli, and Mainz all require extra time, whilst Bayern, Dortmund, and Freiburg pummel their opponents in the managerial debuts of Kompany, Sahin, and Schuster. Also on the pod: a redacted stadium name, Alex's belief in nominative determinism, the St. Pauli connection, and literally the most baffling story you will ever hear in your life.

        • Wait What?!?!

NOTE: Maxi Beier's move to Borussia Dortmund was made official after the recording of this podcast. Also want to note that Tom Rothe's transfer to Union Berlin does indeed have a buyback clause.

In the second episode of the new season: a controversial red card doesn't take away from Miroslav Klose's first win as Nürnberg beat Schalke, Kaiserslautern come from 2-0 down to draw with Fürth, whilst Elversberg get a shock draw with Köln. In the third tier, Dresden also come from 2-0 down to win a fascinating Ost-Derby against Energie Cottbus, three other sides hold 100% records, whilst Osnabrück continue to be stuck at the wrong end of a table. Also on the pod: Hansa continue to be awful, references to Tad Lasso and Taskmaster, and a player finally escaping the island.

          • One of Them

Going Deutsch returns for the 2024/25 season: the 50th season of the 2. Bundesliga kicks-off with a HSV win over Köln, Schalke put five past Eintracht Braunschweig, whilst none of the newly promoted sides are able to pick up a point on the opening day. The 3. Liga starts with an Aachen win on their return, Bielefeld come from behind to beat Cottbus, and Saarbrücken beat another side from Munich. Also on the pod: crypto schemes, power struggles, a Taylor Swift concert, why Alex almost choked in a coffee shop, and which manager is adapting to the suffering of his new club.

            • Euromeister 24: The Turret from Portal 2

Alex Woodward and Tant-Brown discuss the Euro 2024 Final as Spain become the record champions of the competition following a 2-1 win against England. The discuss what happened in the final, why England lost, and why Spain were the best side in the tournament. They also look at the Copa America as Argentina become record champions of that following an eventful 1-0 win over Colombia. Also on the pod: discussions on a train, a movie about a podcast, and which of the two resembles the Oracle Turret from Portal 2.

              • Euromeister 24: Multicultural Patrick Bamfords

Alex Towells returns to the podcast alongside Woodward to discuss the semi-finals of the Euros as Spain and England get through to the final showdown in Berlin. The Copa America also has its semi-finals as well as Argentina and Colombia will meet up in Miami, with no controversy surrounding any game, especially after the full time whistle. Also on the pod: the BBC solve a mystery, Pedri makes a face, a doppelgänger, and how every striker in the world can be compared to Patrick Bamford.

              • Euromeister 24: God Save the Cheese

Euromeister returns to sounding like a normal Going Deutsch episode as Alex goes through the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga fixtures, but we're dragged into the Euros once more: Germany are out having lost 2-1 to Spain whilst the game gets dragged into controversy with its English ref, the Netherlands win by the same score against Türkiye, England somehow win against Switzerland despite continuing to play like garbage, and France squeak through against Portugal. Also on the pod: Alex's favourite moment of the Copa America, the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest, and the best of Swiss signs.

NOTE: Following the recording of this episode, UEFA confirmed that Merih Demiral would receive a two-game ban for his gesture.

It's the round of 16 on Euromeister 24! The three Alexs look at Italy's not-so-shocking exit to Switzerland, Türkiye's win over previous tournament darlings Austria, an eventual game between Germany and Denmark, and complain about England's incredibly uninspiring performance against Slovakia. The Ronaldo problem is discussed as Portugal just edge past Slovenia, the Netherlands sweep past Romania, and Spain are still favourites after comfortably beating Georgia. Also on the pod: controversy at the Copa America, Sir Mark Cavendish, and why the podcast suddenly descended into a conversation about Cars 3.

                  • Euromeister 24: We're Not Sweden

The three Alexs get together once again to recap matchday three of the Euros group stages: Germany draw with Switzerland in Group A whilst Hungary beat Scotland in the 100th minute before both crash out, Croatia are knocked out by a 98th minute Italy equaliser, Group C is the dullest thing of all time, Austria top Group D thanks to a win against the Netherlands, everyone finishes on four points in Group E, and Georgia beat Portugal in Group F. We look ahead and list our favourites and what we think could happen in the knockout rounds whilst Woodward has a quick look at the Copa America. Also on the pod: the saddest photo ever, a very popular fake kit, and which country's fans seem to think they're mistaken with Sweden.
