  • Jeremiah: consequences, compassion & hope
God's Great Purpose in the World (28) Maria Bond teaching from Jeremiah where we see the deep heart God has for His people and the way in which Jeremiah (often called ‘the weeping prophet’) identifies with God’s own heart. Jeremiah was tireless in urging people to return to God. We are challenged to consider how much we have God’s heart and how tireless we are in encouraging people to return to Him. What is our role today in calling a nation, who are increasingly in rebellion, back to God's ways?

  • Habakkuk: trusting when evil seems to prosper
God's Great Purpose in the World (27) . As he pondered the state of his nation, Habakkuk wondered why God remained strangely silent whilst so much evil thrived. He wondered where God was and how long he would allow this to continue. This book provides a picture of a proud people being humbled, whilst the righteous lived by faith in God. It reminds us that whilst God might seem silent and uninvolved in our world, He always has a plan to deal with evil and bring justice...eventually!

  • Zephaniah: hope of restoration or threat of judgement
God's Great Purpose in the World (26) Malcolm Duncan teaching from Zephaniah - "Hope of Restoration or Threat of Judgement". God raised up this prophet to proclaim a warning of coming judgement and to encourage repentance. He also brought a message of hope, when the nation would be restored. As modern-day believers in Christ, do we worship in all sincerity? Zephaniah reminds us how seriously God takes our lives and our relationship with Him, but also that God is always a God of restoration and hope.

  • Nahum: facing the reality of judgment
God's Great Purpose in the World (25) Malcolm Duncan looking at the book of Nahum. The city of Nineveh is its focus: 150 years previously, the city had responded to the preaching of Jonah and turned from its evil ways to serve God. Sadly the Ninevites did not heed Nahum’s warning and as a result they were besieged and the city overthrown. We learn from this that God is patient and slow to anger, but He is not mocked, and will eventually action judgement.

  • Micah: God's call to justice, humility and mercy
God's Great Purpose in the World (24) Malcolm Duncan teaching from Micah. Micah’s prophetic message is similar to that of Isaiah and was written about the same time. It aimed to warn both the Northern and Southern Kingdoms of impending judgement, which would eventually exile the nation. He reminded them (and us today) that God desires moral qualities on the part of his worshipers rather than sacrifices and burnt offerings - ‘to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.’
