SHAG CARPET - for Simon Workman

I can picture little people as small as an ants
walking the little trails in the shadow of the stalks of shag
(in my mind the carpet is dark green)
it’s sometime in the 1970s
but the wee folk who live in the shag
don’t know that 

they just think the giant mailman
whose carpet it is
has a tornado siren for an alarm clock 

and hope he drops a slice of American cheese every once in a while
so they don’t starve 
(he does)

and every time he spills his coffee
there’s a huge flood
and even though their huts are washed away,
incongruously,
the little people dance 

they chalk it up to resilience 

but it’s the caffeine
