This passage opens with:“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time.” If we are to walk carefully, we must be pay attention to our walk and make the most of every opportunity. This exhortation is amplified by three contrasts, "not...but" :

Our fast paced life is full of diversions which take our time and attention. We need to be careful how much time we give to God in prayer, study, and ministry opportunities. How much time is invested in people vs. watching TV?

2. do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is

Understanding God's will for how we live every day in a general sense. How do we please Him with our lives.

3. do not get drunk with wine... but be filled with the Spirit

Drunkenness has no place in the believer's life. We have a problem with drunk driving, binge drinking, and the idea that to have fun we ought to get drunk.

To be filled with the Spirit is to live consciously of the Lord's presence. It is to fill our minds with the Word of God so that God's thoughts are our thoughts and His standards our standards. As we yield to Christ and His Word, the Spirit will lead us in all that we say, do and think. Being filled with the Spirit affects our lives in different areas:

1. Our fellowship with other believers

2. Our worship of God.

3. Our hearts will be filled with gratitude.

4. There will be mutual submission between believers.
