What is the gospel and what is our response to the gospel? We'll see in Ephesians 2:1-10 that undeserving and helpless as I am, God's poured his grace on me like a flood.

After showing the riches the believer has in Christ (1:4-14),Paul prays for the believers in Ephesus. He asks that the Spirit of God might give spiritual understanding in three areas:

1. The Hope of God's Calling -

Our hope has its foundation in our election - God's choosing us and calling us into a relationship with Him. Our future is not decided by fate or other gods, but by God who has predetermined it.

2. The Glory of God's Inheritance in the Saints -

He wants us to see our value to Him - We are His riches... His possession. We have great value to Him - He cherishes us! Our confidence is in Him.

3. The Greatness of God's Power -

God wants us to know the incomparable power of God available to us as believers. This power is illustrated by:

• The Power to Raise Christ from the Dead

• The Power to Place Christ in the Position as Sovereign over All

• The Power to Subject all Spiritual Powers under Christ

• The Power to Appoint Christ over the Church as Head

Paul's desire is that the Holy Spirit would make believers aware of God's power that is available to them.

First, we see the Father Chose Believers in Eternity Past (1:3-6)

Second, we see the Son Redeemed Believers in the Historical Past (1:7-12)

Third, we see the Spirit Sealed Believers in their Personal Past (1:13-14)

1. The Fact of Election

Salvation begins with God, and not with man. John 15:16 says, “Ye have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you.” Romans 3:10–11 is clear that the lost sinner, does not seek God; Luke 19:10 says, that God in His love seeks the sinner.

Does the sinner respond to God’s grace against his own will? No, he responds because God’s grace makes him willing to respond. The mystery of divine sovereignty and human responsibility will never be solved in this life. Both are taught in the Bible (John 6:37). Both are true, and both are essential.

a. Time of Election: Eternity past (“before the foundation of the world” [1:4])

b. Motivation for Election:

· “in love”

· “according to the purpose of his will”

a. Our Sanctification: “That we should be holy and blameless before Him”

b. Our Adoption: ” he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ

3. The Purpose of our Election: “to the praise of his glorious grace” (6)

Ephesians 1:6 (NLT): “So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son.” He has “poured out” his grace on us so that He can get the glory. Yes, we benefit tremendously from his blessings, but his ultimate purpose is to bring glory to Himself.

We need to remember how blessed we are to have been chosen by God to be holy and blameless through Jesus Christ. When we realize that God has chosen us to be a part of his family and takes delight in it…. When we understand all our blessing in Christ, it should humble us and cause us to live lives that bring glory to Him.
