Ephesians 2 is the backdrop to study the following points:
1) Guilt
* The analogy of fallen man as not just a person "drowning in the ocean" but rather a "corpse at the bottom of the ocean", spiritually dead, unable to save themselves.
* Fallen man is enslaved to (a) the world, (b) the devil and (c) the flesh.
2) Grace
* First 2 words of verse 4...BUT GOD! God has graciously intervened!
According to this passage, what has God done for us?
* He has given us spiritual life and caused us to be born again.
* He has seated us with Christ in the Heavenly places and welcomed into the presence of God
* He has saved us from the penalty of sin and judgment.
3) Gratitude
* Humility and comfort will naturally flow from our union with Christ.

How is a person right with God?
Genesis 15 is the backdrop as we look at the following:
1) God makes Abraham a Promise
* God tells Abraham to "number the stars".
* What is true faith? Recognizing our own hopelessness before God, looking away from ourselves and trusting God's promises.
2) God Ratifies this promise
* The strange ceremony, the fire pot and some cut-up animals
* God keeps his promise to Abraham as well as Old Testament Israel.
* This all points to Jesus as the true offspring of Abraham.
"It is Christ-trusting sinners, not the self-trusting 'righteous', who are the children of Abraham."

Why should we be so amazed at God's love for us?

Have we been set free from our sins through our good works? If not, how have we been set free?
(3) Jesus came to make us His own.

For what purpose has Jesus set us free from our sin?

How does John respond to these wonderful truths? What is your response?
(4) Jesus will come again one day.

1 - It will be GLORIOUS (for those who trust in Him)
2 - It will be UNIVERSAL
3 - It will be accompanied by weeping (for unbelievers)
