  • Rethinking Your Teenager: Shifting from Control and Conflict to Structure and Nurture to Raise Accountable Young Adults
Rethinking Your Teenager: Shifting from Control and Conflict to Structure and Nurture to Raise Accountable Young Adults

The teenage years. . . parents fear this stage, dreading it even while watching their adorable toddlers explore the world. When it arrives, they try to control their teenager, in turn causing their teenager to push back more intensely. It's a natural instinct on both sides: teenagers are changing in every way while trying to assert their independence, and parents are faced with the challenge of coming up with rules, expectations, and standards for behavior without a genuine understanding of what is happening. But the result of this pattern is a parent-child relationship defined by conflict and reactivity--a breeding ground for stress, anger, and anxiety, all of which reinforce those same cultural stereotypes and worst fears.

But it doesn't have to be this way. In this book, family therapist Darby Fox challenges parents to redefine the goals of adolescence by reorienting their focus from what they want their child to be to on who they want their child to be. Darby not only equips parents with the insight to understand the changes taking place in their child's brain and body and support their adolescent's bid for independence but also offers an approach that allows parents to engage their adolescent in a relationship instead of struggling in an endless battle for control. The book is organized around a series of persistent myths about adolescence, each of which the author tears down with a combination of cutting edge neuroscience research, developmental psychology, and her own mix of clinical observations and experience raising four children.

Darby offers a new model for the parent-child relationship, encouraging parents to let go of the attempt to control their teenager and focus instead on creating mutual respect, providing structure and nurture, and encouraging independence in their developing teenager. She walks through the keys to combining structure and nurture and teaches every parent how to connect with their teen while holding them accountable for their behavior. If parents approach teen years with the same thoughtful preparation, sense of awe and wonder, and responsibility that they do the early childhood years, it can be an enjoyable and rewarding developmental stage that deepens, rather than damages, parent-child relationships.

In an interview on your program Darby can discuss:

•How to create win/win situations when a teen becomes upset.
•How to decode the language of teenagers in order to gain respect.
•How to buck the stereotype that dealing with teens is a headache nobody wants.
•Giving your teen the tools they need to make smart decisions instead of controlling their decisions
•How to debunk the myths of adolescence that make it more difficult to actually handle your adolescent child
•Understanding what is happening in your teen's mind and body beyond the basics
    •How to handle online learning
    •and much more!

"Darby Fox is a true champion of her field. Rethinking Your Teenager illuminates the complex lives of teenagers in an in-depth yet accessible way.
This book is a gift not only for parents but for anyone seeking to connect with and understand teens."
—Kim Messier, wife of NHL hockey legend Mark Messier

"Darby Fox reconciles both the practical and spiritual aspects of what it means to be a parent in the 21st century.
This is not a parenting book. This is a manual for a more uplifting future."

  • YOU MAY NOT THINK ABOUT SUN SAFETY IN WINTER… BUT YOU SHOULD
The Hidden Dangers of Winter Sun Exposure

Sun safety habits are important all times of year, and that includes in the winter. Winter activities, such as snow skiing, can result in significant exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun – the leading cause of skin cancers – as UV rays reflect off surfaces, even on cloudy and hazy days. This winter, sun exposure may be a special concern as people spend more time outside, due to COVID-19.

Of particular concern is melanoma, a form of skin cancer. When diagnosed in its early stages, melanoma can be treatable, but it may come back in 20-30% of patients. And in its advanced stages, melanoma can be deadly.

Dr. Sigrun Hallmeyer, a Chicago-based oncologist discusses:
    • Why sun safety is important all year round
    • Warning signs of skin cancer, including melanoma
    • The importance of treatment if someone is diagnosed with melanoma
    • Treatment options to help prevent a skin cancer called melanoma from coming back after it has been removed by surgery

  • HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS: WHAT PARENTS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS NEED TO KNOW
HEAR HOW ONE COLLEGE STUDENT’S LIFE CHANGED FOREVER AFTER NEARLY DYING FROM A VACCINE-PREVENTABLE DISEASE

Dr. Len Friedland, practicing physician, vaccine researcher and Vice President and Director, Scientific Affairs and Public Health, Vaccines, GSK

Jamie Schanbaum, meningitis survivor, US Para-athlete and GSK spokesperson

    BACKGROUND
It's that time of the school year where teens and young adults are counting down the days to the holidays and a much-needed break from classes. In 2008, Jamie was a college freshman getting ready to complete her first semester and head home for the holidays when her life changed forever. In just 24 hours, she went from being a healthy college student to fighting for her life after contracting meningococcal disease, also known as meningitis. Jamie spent seven months in the hospital, ultimately losing both of her legs below the knees, and all of her fingers due to the disease. While many colleges require MenACWY vaccination, MenB vaccination has only been available since 2014, and most colleges still do not require it. She is sharing her story to ensure that parents are aware there are 2 different types of vaccines to help prevent meningitis – one for MenACWY, and one for MenB, , to help other families avoid her experience. During the pandemic, it’s more important than ever for parents to educate themselves and utilize the vaccines available to help protect their kids against vaccine-preventable diseases they may be at risk for, like meningitis.

    DID YOU KNOW?
•Meningitis is an uncommon, but serious illness that can cause life-threatening complications, or even death. Early symptoms of meningitis may be similar to those of the flu, but can progress quickly and can be fatal, sometimes within 24 hours. ,
•Up to 1 in 5 meningitis survivors suffer long-term consequences, such as brain damage, amputations, hearing loss and nervous system problems. Among those who contract meningitis, 1 in 10 will die, despite treatment, sometimes in as little as 24 hours.7
•Teens and young adults are at an increased risk for contracting meningitis because it can spread through certain common behaviors such as living in close quarters like college dorms, kissing, and sharing drinks, utensils, or smoking devices.4,
•From 2011 through March 2019, meningitis B (MenB) caused all US college meningococcal outbreaks, which involved 13 campuses, 50 cases, and 2 deaths among an at-risk population of approximately 253,000 students.

    VACCINATION IS STILL IMPORTANT
•Even if your college-aged children are not attending in-person classes due to COVID-19 precautions, they may still be at risk for diseases like MenB.4
•Your teen or young adult may have received MenACWY vaccination when they were younger, but most have not yet received MenB vaccination, which only became available in 2014. Recent CDC data show that still, only about 1 in 5 17-year-olds in the US received at least one dose of MenB vaccination in 2019.12
•Winter break is a good time to schedule a wellness visit and talk to your child’s doctor about the two different types of vaccines to help prevent meningococcal disease – one for MenACWY and one for MenB.2,3

  • Hope for Those with Hemophilia
    STORIES OF INSPIRATION
    During Holiday Season

In recent years, people with hemophilia A have found hope thanks to important developments in the treatment of this bleeding disorder. For some living with this chronic condition, this may mean experiencing the coming holiday season with a new outlook on living with hemophilia A.

Guy is in his mid-30’s and was diagnosed with hemophilia A at birth. As a child, he experienced spontaneous brain bleeds at 18-months-old and again at three-years-old, which led to him becoming legally blind and experiencing seizures. Guy remembers going to the hospital multiple times a week for treatment and having over 20 surgeries. As a young adult, he avoided certain activities that might lead to a bleed.

Hemophilia A is a rare genetic bleeding disorder, typically diagnosed at a very young age, in which a person’s blood does not clot properly, leading to uncontrolled bleeding that can occur spontaneously. There are approximately 20,000 people who have hemophilia in the United States, with hemophilia A being the most common form.1,2 For people diagnosed with this rare condition, it can be a life-altering diagnosis. Even with treatment, hemophilia A can result in bleeds in muscles and joints that may lead to joint damage and chronic pain.2

People like Guy can face significant challenges managing their condition.3 After decades of accepting this as his normal, he began a different medicine that he takes once a month and has experienced fewer bleeds requiring treatment. Guy recently earned a master’s degree to pursue a career in strategic marketing. He has so much to celebrate this holiday season--it will be particularly special as his first as a newlywed after getting married in a small ceremony this past June.

Dr. Amy Shapiro, a hematologist-oncologist and Co-Founder of the Indiana Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center along with Guy Law, to discuss the impact this latest treatment continues to have for people living with hemophilia A.

  • WHAT ARE AMERICAN’S TOP FINANCIAL PRIORITES IN 2021?
HOW CAN THEY BOUNCE BACK FROM PANDEMIC PROBLEMS?

Financial resilience is the ability to withstand life events that impact one's income and/or assets. Some financially stressful events, such as unemployment, divorce, disability, and health problems can affect people in different ways, and it’s clear that many Americans have been facing short-term money challenges brought about by COVID-19.

A new survey shows say the pandemic has changed their perceptions of what’s important in life as it relates to their finances. For example:
A majority of adults (nearly 60%) say they have experienced financial stress amid the pandemic.
About two-thirds now want to save more, view emergency funds as more important than ever, and place more value on being resilient.
    One-third had their employment affected.
1 in 5 had to tap into an emergency fund.
1 in 4 took on more debt.

But there are strategies to help everyone achieve financial resilience in today’s climate.

    Strategies include:
Increasing retirement savings: Saving for retirement is a top contributor to financial resilience, yet 60% of respondents report they’re falling behind.
Having a source of guaranteed lifetime income in retirement: 90% agree it’s important to have source of income that will not run out as they age, but most don’t know how to make that happen.
Building an emergency savings fund: 77% of individuals now report having emergency savings compared to prior to the pandemic when only 69% said they had savings for emergencies.
Paying down dept: Nearly 65% of those surveyed say they have some form of debt beyond their car or mortgage.

Shelly-Ann Eweka, Director of Financial Planning Strategy at TIAA to discuss strategies of how Americans can focus on long term financial planning, especially during periods of economic uncertainty. She’ll also reveal details of the Financial Resiliency Survey.

  • TIPS FOR NAVIGATING THE HOLIDAYS WHEN COPING WITH A MENTAL HEALTH CONDITION
The holiday season can be a joyous time of year, but it can also be a stressful time for many people. Whether it’s financial worries over a long gift list, anxiety about difficult family dynamics, exhaustion from juggling a hectic schedule, or loneliness being apart from loved ones due to these unprecedented times, emotions are often heightened at this time of year and mood changes are common.1
Even people with no history of mental illness may feel confused about whether they are experiencing the temporary feelings of “depression” associated with the “holiday blues” or if symptoms may be something more serious that should be discussed with their healthcare provider.
And for the 1 in 5 Americans who are living with pre-existing mental health conditions, research shows that the holidays can be particularly challenging.2 In fact, 64% of people with mental illness report holidays make their conditions worse.1
This can be especially true for people who struggle with certain mental health conditions that can be exacerbated by stress. For those living with bipolar I disorder, for example, stress, sleep disruption, and heightened emotional reactions to their environment—all common around “the most wonderful time of the year”—can trigger both manic and depressive episodes,3,4 so it’s important that people work to manage stress and monitor symptoms closely.
Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Dr. Jessica Whelan, discusses why the holiday season can be particularly challenging for people living with mental health conditions like bipolar I disorder, the difference between holiday blues and bipolar I disorder, and a treatment option people living with bipolar I disorder can discuss with their doctors.

  • Navigating the Holidays During a Pandemic:
How Innovative Health Tech Keeps Families Connected to Care
Managing chronic conditions like diabetes can be stressful
Learn how technology can help keep your mind and body healthy and connected to care

COVID-19 has many feeling stressed and isolated, exacerbating mental health challenges across the country. The CDC recently reported that more than two in five Americans struggle with mental or behavioral health issues due to the pandemic, with 31% noting symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder.

Now, heading into a holiday season where many are foregoing traditional gatherings, the space between us can feel even more expansive – particularly for children and families managing diabetes. A survey by Opinion Health and supported by Abbott exploring the emotional impact of diabetes on children and families found a diabetes diagnosis makes a child 73% more likely to be anxious than those without it and, nearly half of parents surveyed believed their child’s diabetes caused them to have mental health issues.

To add to this, more than 50% of people with diabetes who were diagnosed with COVID-19 have been hospitalized, highlighting the population’s higher risk for severe complications. Connected care has never been more important; advancements in health technology, paired with the uptick in telehealth, have been instrumental in helping people stay healthy, especially during the pandemic and
    upcoming holiday season.

Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are one of the advancements helping people with diabetes manage their condition safely from home – leaving them one less thing to worry about in the current environment. This is particularly true for parents of children with diabetes who reported feeling a heavy emotional burden over managing their child’s condition. Access to wearable CGM technology
that eliminates the need for fingersticks plays a critical role in making it easier.

Larry Kurt Midyett, M.D., pediatric endocrinologist, Midwest Women's and Children's Specialty Group, to explore insights from the survey and learn how health technology is empowering families to manage challenges associated with diabetes throughout the pandemic and into the holiday season.

  • SURVIVORSHIP TODAY SERIES EXPLORES REALITIES OF LIFE WITH CANCER IN 2020
Many people believe that once cancer treatment ends, life goes back to normal. For cancer survivors, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

That’s why a series called Survivorship Today: What It’s Like to Live with Cancer was created to share stories of people across the country who have been affected by cancer and advance our collective understanding of what it’s like to live with the disease today. The series helps bring attention to their personal triumphs and challenges, because with greater understanding, we can inspire more action and better support.

When AJ was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer, he was told he only had a few years to live. Now, seven years later, he has joined Survivorship Today to share the physical and emotional challenges he still experiences even after treatment has ended.

AJ still experiences limited use of his right arm and hand, reduced sensation in his right leg that impacts his gait, fatigue and other issues that can make everyday tasks difficult to perform. As a lung cancer survivor, he faces even greater challenges in the height of COVID-19. Research has shown the virus is associated with a high burden of severity in patients with lung cancer, and AJ finds he is once again feeling isolated and his family needs to take extra precautions.

He also used to be fixated on making it from one milestone to the next, but soon realized those feelings were stealing not only his happiness, but also the happiness of those around him. Today, AJ tries to live each moment in the present, being fully immersed in what he’s doing. He practices daily meditation, listens more and says his relationships have become stronger than ever.

There are nearly 17 million cancer survivors in the U.S. today, and thanks to advances in research, that number is expected to increase to 26 million by 2040. Despite this progress, research is only beginning to understand how cancer impacts us over time.

Joining AJ is Shelley Fuld Nasso, CEO of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivors (NCCS), who can discuss NCCS’ 2020 State of Cancer Survivorship survey and ways to better support survivorship needs, particularly during the time of COVID-19.

AJ and Shelley discuss why they got involved in Survivorship Today, and what they want others to know about life with cancer today.
