It’s natural to think that the way to prevent disappointment is to set lower expectations. The opposite is true with Christmas. If “the most wonderful time of the year” hasn’t always been so wonderful, the solution is not to expect less. Instead, this is the time of year when God teaches us to look for more. This week we see how God wants us to look for bigger greatness when he acts in our lives and in our world. It’s natural for us to think that great things will happen through wealth, power, fame, and status. At Christmas, however, God teaches us how he often works his greatest blessings through poverty, weakness, obscurity, and humility. What was evident in the announcement that Mary would be the mother of Jesus will prove to be evident in our lives too: God brings down the proud and the powerful and lifts up the weak and lowly.
