There's something I hear constantly from the people I work with.
I know I need to slow down. I just can't. I feel better when I'm moving.
And honestly? I think they're right.
Not about needing to push harder — but about something the wellness industry keeps getting wrong. Stillness isn't one thing. And for high-functioning, deeply capable people, the conventional version of rest often doesn't work. Not because something is wrong with them. Because their nervous system knows something worth listening to.
For most of human history we gathered around fires in the evening. Not to meditate. Not to optimize. To decompress, receive story, and be held by something outside ourselves. Your brain's default mode network — the same network that activates during meditation, during fire circles, during integration — doesn't distinguish between those containers. It just knows: this is the mode where I process. Where I rest. Where I come home.
Your Netflix habit is not a character flaw. It's a 200,000 year old instinct looking for its modern container.
That's where we start today.
