So she demanded that Abraham -cast out this slave woman.- Galatians 4 enables us to understand the significance of this event as it is interpreted to us by Paul under inspiration of the Spirit. Ishmael was the son of the flesh but Isaac was the son of the promise. We, too, as Christians are children of the promise of salvation by grace through faith. Therefore, we should not live under the bondage of the law anymore with its legal requirements such as circumcision,but live in love and holiness led by the Spirit under the guiding principle of love for God and others. Re-submission to legalism must be radically rejected even as Sarah had Hagar decisevely cast out.

Obedience to God has always been a hallmark of mankind's proper relationship to the Almighty. As people saved by the sovereign mercy of God, we are enabled by the Holy Spirit's internal work to both desire and have the ability to obey Christ's commands. Obedience is not only a characteristic feature of the Christian disciple's life, but it is also a practice that reveals the strength of our love toward Christ, and it is a practice in which we find deep joy and satisfaction.

Overview: The narrative of this story extends back to Gen. 11-30, -Now Sarai was barren...- Yahweh's promise to give Abraham a son, along with a multitude of descendants, seemed impossible, since Abraham was now in his late 90's and his wife, Sarah, was nearly 90. It was not until many years later after it was first made that the Lord's promise of a son to this elderly couple came to pass. The reality is that it did come to pass because God said it would. As we see not only from this incident, but throughout the Old and New Testaments, God does what he says he will do. Perhaps the greatest promise God has made, that he will be our God and we will be his people, will be fulfilled when Christ returns and we shall be in his presence forever.

Overview: A unifying theme in this passage of Genesis is the types of fears experienced by Lot, by his two daughters, by Abraham, and by King Abimelech. Though initially wanting to flee to Zoar, Lot became afraid to live there, his daughters were afraid they'd have no heirs, Abraham was afraid for his own life when he claimed Sarah was his sister, and Abimelech feared the swift judgment of God for taking another man's wife into his household. The basic remedy to the fears that invade our lives is to trust in God. We also see, as in Abraham's case, that sin not truly repented of can manifest itself many years later. Only the pagan Abimelech seems to have had a commendable fear of God's judgment. Yet we also see in Abraham that despite his weaknesses, he is still called -a prophet- by Yahweh and he exercised his priestly ministry by interceding in prayer for Abimelech and the women in his household. So God works with us, despite our failures and sins, to accomplish his gracious purpose in and through our lives.

Overview: Psalm 73 is one of the most beloved Psalms in the Psalter because it deals with a perennial question that God's people often have- Why do the righteous suffer while the wicked are prosperous and comfortable- Asaph, the writer, begins the Psalm by affirming his faith in the goodness of God. Then he relates his own fierce struggle with envy of the wicked's easy life in comparison to the poverty of his own life. The turning point happened when he entered the sanctuary of worship and then his perspective totally changed- he realized that God was always with him, in constant and never absent presence, and he realized that he had the greatest blessing of all- to be near to God. Truly God was good to him to grant him the blessing of His constant companionship. All other things thus fell by the wayside.
