Episode 285 of the GoodTrash GenreCast sees Dalton, Dustin and Arthur finishing their discussion of the Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks love trilogy. They dive deep into the three films and try to break them open, one by one to discover if there's anything worth discussing. This is a continuation of Episode 284, so there are no games or review in this episode, it is all analysis. So, jump in to hear us talk about Joe Versus the Volcano, Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail!
Episode 284 is the first in a two part look at the Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks Romantic Comedy Trilogy: Joe Versus the Volcano, Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail. We initially planned to only talk about Sleepless in Seattle then called an audible before recording. Similar to our Spider-Man Trilogy Two Parter, the first entry on the Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan trilogy is our review and thoughts on the individual films and how they work together as a trilogy. We then play our game by recounting our favorite moments from the three movies. We don't hit many rom-coms on the show, but this week we made a very fun exception. How do these films hold up? Tune in to find out. And tune in next week to here our full analysis on the three films.
On Episode 283 of the GenreCast, the gang looks at the 2002 action-fantasy movie, Reign of Fire. Reign of Fire is set in the near future and stars Matthew McConaughey, Gerard Butler, and Christian Bale. This week, we quickly review Reign of Fire, and then play our game. The game plays off the three star personas of Bale, Butler, and McConaughey. After that we offer our Reign of Fire analysis, and discuss the movies politics, themes and ideals.
Does the film still fly high? Tune in to find out our thoughts on Reign of Fire!
We keep the Asian-cinema going this week with a look at a film distributed by wunderkind studio, A24. In recent years, A24 has become the new Miramax, boasting a near flawless record of critically-acclaimed indie darings. They made kicked off with a bang, dropping the cult hit Spring Breakers. But has their success and praise always been deserving? We go back to 2014, the second year of A24, and look at the 15th movie they distributed in that short time span, Revenge of the Green Dragons.
Welcome to a special edition of the GoodTrash GenreCast. On this week's show, we have a patreon-sponsored movie. Our patreon supporter, Keithan, got to set the programming for this week, and he stayed mostly true to his roots with this pick. He sets us up with the kinetic, high-energy Fallen Angels from director Wong Kar-Wai. Fallen Angels is a dreamlike piece that is more experience than story, so is it worth your time? Tune in and find out.
With our Growing Up in Summer marathon behind us, we decide to move on to bigger and brighter things... Or, something like that. If nothing else, we giggle. A lot. Because, we return to our regularly schedule program with what many have called the worst movie of 2017, The Snowman.
Across the country, schools are getting back in session. And with that, summer is unofficially over. Which means, the Growing Up in Summer marathon must come to an end. And we decided to go with a Dalton and Arthur favorite, Charlie Bartlett. They both love it, but will Dustin hold it in the same regard?
In a twist, Dalton was unable to make it to this week's show! But, he sent his thoughts in for our review and game.
Our Growing Up in Summer marathon is winding down. We only have two more stops. This week, our film journey brings us to the aughts and places us in small town Texas. We got a bit tired of the male-centric stories we were looking at, and decided to look at a female-led, female-written and female-directed film. That's right, we're talking Drew Barrymore's Whip It!
I know what you're thinking, "Isn't it about time to wrap this marathon up?" Well, here's the thing. We do what we want. And we only got to the 80s with Boyz N the Hood. The way we see it, we gotta take this Coming-of-Age Marathon all the way to today. Or, at least the aughts. With that in mind, we enter part five of our marathon, move into the 90s and discuss the emotional gut-puncher, The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
