A fast, $5 at-home test for COVID-19 has been granted emergency authorization for use in the USA, but north of the border Health Canada is dragging its feet. Dr. David Juncker, chair of biomedical engineering at McGill, says there are many reasons for Health Canada to approve at-home tests, which could potentially allow for daily testing of a large portion of the population. He says Canada has already been funding the research, but the high barrier to entry is discouraging innovation, meaning the tests won't be available when they're needed. Juncker says normal approval rules need not apply during a pandemic, and he joins Gormley to tell us more.
