Gosan-ri Haenyeo, Kim Im-saeng

Kim Im-saeng has been working as a haenyeo (female diver) for 35 years in Gosan-ri village of Jeju City Hangyeong-myeon area. Despite being over seventy years old, she still enjoys diving, and she wishes to continue the life of a haenyeo in the years to come. Her talent includes singing traditional Jeju songs like ‘Seowoojesori’ and ‘leodosana’, and her hobby is cooking. In 2018, she was invited along with other haenyeos from Gosan-ri village to perform on an international stage in Canada. In 2021, she appeared on the show , hosted by long time actor Choi Bool-am, showcasing her cooking skills. Her life as a haenyeo may be challenging, like the saying “Earn money in the afterlife, spend it in the living world”, but she believes that being underwater is the most comfortable place for her and feels that she was destined to be a haenyeo.
