Memory is important, but it can be a hindrance. After recounting images of the Exodus and the crossing of the Red Sea, God says "remember NOT the former things..."(Isa 43:18). Then against the routine and drudgery of religion for religion's sake, God says, "Put me in remembrance..." And finally, after a long comedic narrative about idolatry (44:6-18), God calls us to remember who we are in relation to him - "remember...you are my servants, I formed you...you will not be forgotten by me...I've taken care of your sin problem, so return to me" (Isa 44:21-22).
