Peace often feels elusive. Look at the world today: War and conflict dominates the headlines.

Why do we need hope? Because sometimes we feel hopeless. Life is hard. It’s full of trials and tribulation.

It can feel overwhelming at times especially if you lose your job, or your health, or a loved one, or friend.

We also face many fears in this life such as death, enemies, sorrow and pain, judgment, hunger and thirst, abandonment, or being alone. 

We all struggle with one or more of these fears. And the more we dwell on them, the more hopeless we feel. 

Now the solution is not to ignore these problems. Rather the solution is hope: Hope in a real solution.

Not just wishful thinking but a rock solid assurance in something. Or rather in someone.

Winter is when the world feels stripped bear. The days are darker. Life slows down.

Winter can be harsh. Perhaps some of you are feeling that way now – isolated, weary, or burdened by struggles you did not ask for.

Here’s a thing about winter. It comes for us all. None of us can avoid it. Life is not a perpetual spring or summer. Seasons of hardship and loss will arrive.

But the question we face is this: How will we face winter when it comes? 

In Paul the Apostle’s final chapter of his life when facing the winter of his life both figuratively and literally, we can see and learn how by God’s grace, he demonstrates how to endure with faith, hope and courage.

Do we care supremely about the glory of God? And do we care sincerely about the flourishing of people's souls?

The blood of Jesus is not a free pass to live a life of sin with no contrition or no remorse.

Imagine being responsible for something that has eternal consequences.

We desperately need godly leaders – elders, deacons, disciple makers – in our church and in our generation who tremble at the words of God.

On Thanksgiving Day, it's a great time to think about thanksgiving as a daily practice – a way of living that transforms not just the holiday meal but the whole course of our lives.

In our generation, we don't have much experiential knowledge of fasting.
