Levi gave a great banquet where Jesus dines with tax collectors and others causing the Pharisees and Scribes to “grumble.” By grumbling that Jesus dined with sinners, these religious leaders show that are at odds with God’s saving purposes. Jesus came to call sinners to repentance. Such banquets are a foreshadow of the great eschatological banquet where the redeemed will dine with the King.

This message discusses inspecting the doctrines and deeds of those who claim to speak for Christ. If some teacher or self-proclaimed prophet teaches doctrines that are contrary to the Scriptures, they must be rejected. We also learn about the connection between doctrine and deed as we show how sinful deeds are part of the fruit of those who have wayward doctrine. Be on guard against the wolves in sheep’s clothing who desire to pillage Christ’s flock through their empty words.

This wide path is the default path for every person born into this world. We learn in today’s passage that one must be born again to enter the narrow path leading to eternal life.

Christians are people who have been rescued from the clutches of wickedness and sin and given an eternal inheritance in the kingdom of God. We explain what that means and why it is important. In the applications to this, we expound passages about both the warnings and promises concerning wrath, turning to Christ, and being assured of a future inheritance in the kingdom of God.
