  • Gratitude as Spiritual Warfare in a Culture of Complaint
God's Word calls Christians to give thanks in all circumstances. In this episode of Contending for the Word, Dave Jenkins explains how gratitude helps believers resist grumbling, entitlement, fear, and cynicism by remembering God's character, promises, and saving grace in Jesus Christ. Drawing from 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18, Romans 1, Philippians 4, Colossians, and Ephesians 6, Dave considers thanksgiving as an expression of faith and dependence on God. He also explains how gratitude shapes biblical discernment, helping Christians distinguish truth from error, recognize faithfulness, and correct others with humility and love. The episode closes with seven practical encouragements for cultivating gratitude through prayer, remembering the gospel, encouraging others, and participating faithfully in the life of the local church. Christians can grieve honestly while continuing to give thanks for the mercy of belonging to Christ. • Remembering God’s Goodness Strengthens Faith and Gratitude
Remembering God's goodness strengthens faith, fuels gratitude, and helps Christians trust the Lord when present circumstances are difficult. In this episode of Contending for the Word Q&A, Dave Jenkins considers Psalms 103 and 77 and the biblical call to remember God's character, promises, and works. He explains how spiritual forgetfulness feeds unbelief, comparison, and discontentment, and how remembering God's grace redirects our hearts toward worship and faithful obedience. At the center of this encouragement are the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. God's goodness is rooted in His unchanging character, and His love is decisively revealed in His Son. The episode concludes with five practical ways to remember His faithfulness and grow in gratitude today. • Why the Sabbath Moved from Saturday to Sunday
Why do we worship on Sunday if the Sabbath is on Saturday? Throughout the world, the vast majority of Christian denominations hold worship services on Sunday. However, if you ask professing Christians what caused Sabbath worship to move from the last day of the week to the first, most would either say the Sabbath is unrelated to Sunday worship or point to tradition. But there are important biblical reasons why the Sabbath changed from Saturday to Sunday. It's important first of all because Christ said that if you teach someone to disobey one of the least commandments, you will be least in the kingdom of heaven and the Sabbath is one of the ten commandments. But it's important because the Sabbath is about the rest we have in Christ. It is the day our risen Lord provides for his people so that they can be set apart from the world and all its cares, and go forth to do the work that Christ's atonement made possible. Some of the confusion surrounding the Sabbath is related to a misunderstanding of Israel's place in scripture. Israel's whole calendar was built around Passover and Pentecost and their observance and the Sabbaths around them were set every year based on the day of the week , but because Israel and their observances were a type pointing forward to Christ and his fulfillment, all of their Passovers and Pentecosts and their calendar that changed yearly were nothing more than shadows. There has only been one Passover that caused sins to be forgiven. There has been only one Pentecost where the Spirit of God inhabited his people. And their fulfillment caused the Sabbath to be set from that day forth. Please join us as we consider this important topic.

  • Matthew 7.1-12 - Sermon on the Mount - Part 8
This sermon examines the nuanced teachings of Jesus in Matthew 7 regarding the proper exercise of judgment and the nature of persistent prayer. It distinguishes between rash, hypocritical criticism and righteous judgment, emphasizing that believers must first address their own sins before addressing those of others. The text further clarifies the distinction between sharing the gospel with the unsaved and engaging in doctrinal debate, urging Christians to recognize the limits of human persuasion in spiritual matters. Finally, the lesson highlights the assurance of God's faithfulness in answering the prayers of His children, contrasting the imperfect love of earthly parents with the perfect, sovereign care of the Heavenly Father.
