Topic: Rejoice! Is a Verb!
1 Thessalonians 5.16 - Rejoice always, 17pray continually, 18give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
Psalm 118.24 - This is the day which the LORD has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
chairó: Rejoice, be glad, be joyful
1. to be "cheer"ful, i.e. calmly happy or well-off
2. as salutation (on meeting or parting), be well
Appear seventy-four times in the Greek New Testament, ranging from imperative greetings
(“Rejoice!” or “Greetings!”) to descriptions of deep, Spirit-wrought joy. Whether conveying
courtesy in everyday communication or celebrating redemptive realities, the word consistently
reflects gladness rooted in God’s gracious activity.
Verb “chairo” - A verb is a "doing" or "action" word that tells us what a person is doing, Verbs
can show, for example, physical action (run), mental action (think), or a state of being (is).
Philippians 4.1-9 - Rejoice in the Lord - 1Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, that is how you must stand firm in the Lord, my beloved. 4Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5Let your gentleness be apparent to all. The Lord is near. 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think on these things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me, put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
Matthew 2.9-12 10 - 9When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. 12And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
Acts 15.31 - The People of Antioch Rejoice from the encouraging message received from the Apostles and Elders of the church - The Letter for Gentile Believers - 22 Then the apostles and elders together with the whole church in Jerusalem chose delegates, and they sent them to Antioch of Syria with Paul and Barnabas to report on this decision. The men chosen were two of the church leaders—Judas (also called Barsabbas) and Silas. 23This is the letter they took with them:
“This letter is from the apostles and elders, your brothers in Jerusalem. It is written to the Gentile believers in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia. Greetings!
24“We understand that some men from here have troubled you and upset you with their teaching, but we did not send them! 25So we decided, having come to complete agreement, to send you official representatives, along with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26 who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 We are sending Judas and Silas to confirm what we have decided concerning your question. 28 “For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay no greater burden on you than these few requirements: 29You must abstain from eating food offered to idols, from consuming blood or the meat of strangled animals, and from sexual immorality. If you do this, you will do well. Farewell.” 30The messengers went at once to Antioch, where they called a general meeting of the believers and delivered the letter. 31And there was great rejoicing throughout the church that day as they read this encouraging message. 32Then Judas and Silas, both being prophets, spoke at length to the believers, encouraging and strengthening their faith. 33They stayed for a while, and then the believers sent them back to the church in Jerusalem with a blessing of peace.g 35 Paul and Barnabas stayed in Antioch.
They and many others taught and preached the word of the Lord there.
2 Corinthians 6.3-10 - Paul’s Hardships - 3We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited. 4Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; 5in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger; 6in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; 7in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left; 8through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; 9 known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; 10 sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.
John 20.20 - Jesus Appears to His Disciples - 19That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said. 20 As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They “rejoiced” when they saw the Lord! They were filled with joy when the saw the Lord] What happens when we encounter Jesus, we
are “Filled with Joy” - Joy causes us to act out cheerfulness, gladness, amidst chaos. Notice the disciples were afraid of the Jewish leaders because the Jewish leaders instigated Christ’s crucifixion, and were against the followers of Christ. The disciples being afraid of the Jewish leaders for that reason could have continued in despair and discouragement, but seeing Christ they were joyful. Whilst the circumstances of them being an enemy of the Jewish leadership did not change, the resurrection of Christ changed their countenance and brought them great joy.
1 Thessalonians 5 - The Day of the Lord - 1Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5 You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. Final Instructions - 12 Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. 14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21 but test them all; hold on to what is good, 22 reject every kind of evil. 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful,and he will do it. What will make us finish our race of faith - Rejoicing right?
Hebrews 12.1-3 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
How can you cultivate rejoicing? Cultivating a Life of Truth [1 Cor 13.6 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
Psalm 119.14 - 14I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. God’s Kingdom ways gives us reason to Rejoice continually because His Kingdom brings us victory.
Revelations 5.4 “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!”
