Our discussion on feminism continues today with Sister Elizabeth Oppel! Last time she was with us, we discussed the history of the movement and what true feminism looks like. Today we’re discussing how society has shaped women’s ideas of equality and freedom, until that freedom of “we have the right to vote and the right to own property” has become, whether through OnlyFans, or through Hollywood’s portrayals of relationships, or through other ways, “we are empowered through the right to sell our bodies to the world.” But is that power, and is that freedom, or does that take something from women instead?

Stained glass, mother Mary, crosses, and a white, blond haired, blue eyed Jesus…can the portrayal of this type of Christianity be all inclusive? Can it be inclusive at all? Why is Jesus almost always depicted as a white man?

Welcome back to Gotta b Me everyone! We’re so honored to be hosting Sasha King, beautiful wife, mother of five, and founder/director of Concrete Rose 🌹. Concrete Rose is a non profit organization for black youth working to further their education through the knowledge of their history, volunteering for community aid, and learning to work together to accomplish their dreams.  Sis. Sasha is passionate about the importance of black representation and the negative effect the lack of such can procure. There is no limits to the possibilities of the futures of black youth when they are able to see, feel, and trust in their representatives. You’ll never find a more motherly, supportive woman than Sis. King as she encourages us and all struggling youth to stay aware(woke) and enjoy our life as vibrant black young women.

We’re back with another book that changed our lives and perspective! History textbooks never offer the whole picture, and sometimes they paint the picture with such a slant that heroes turn into villains and villains into heroes. And what we got from our history textbooks was not what we got through the autobiography. He was powerful and prophetic, and that pride that he was able to instill in those who listened to him then can still be felt by us!

With today’s guest, Sister Kennedi Ford, who has her degree in English with Creative Emphasis, we discuss the lack of African American authors in classic literature and the portrayal of African Americans in various facets of entertainment. While it’s true that African Americans are being given roles to play in movies, so many of those roles are not “our story.” Sister Kennedi hopes that her writing will help shape others’ view of American literature, and be able to show readers that African Americans are the main characters of their story.
