Governed by God

00:30 - Defending Theonomy, Part 2: What does it mean for Jesus to reign over all powers and dominions? What is the Kingdom of God? What does it look like, where is it, and how do we enter? What does it mean for Jesus to have all authority on heaven and on earth?

00:15 - Introduction to Theonomy. What is Theonomy and what is a basic definition of it? What does Deuteronomy 4:5-8 say and how does it apply to us today?

09:48 - On today's program I play and review several clips from a recent Pastors Talk episode produced by 9Marks. The hosts, Jonathan Leeman and Mark Dever, interview Carl Trueman about his most recent book, The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self. Although the book and the interview are excellent, a few comments are made about theonomy that are worth bringing up. The men raise several straw men arguments regarding theonomy before knocking them down, seemly misunderstanding what theonomy actually teaches.

On today's program I provide an audio recording of a recent article I wrote in defense of Sola Scriptura. I have several friends and family who are either Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodox, so many of our discussions tend to revolve around the authority of Scripture. In the article, I first present a case for Sola Scriptura. Then I offer a few criticisms, specifically focused on the Roman Catholic perspective. Finally, I end with several key questions and answers.

On today's program I had the pleasure of interviewing Steve Moyer on the topic of behavioral economics. Steve is a certified financial planner and a chartered financial consultant, currently working for Mariner Wealth Advisors. He is also a Christian and has spent his career applying Christian principles to the realm of economics. We cover a lot of topics today, from behavioral finance to the role of government in economics. Please come check out the conversation!

(00:36) Law of the Day: Numbers 5:5-10 – “When a man or woman commits any of the sins that people commit by breaking faith with the LORD, and that person realizes his guilt, he shall confess his sin that he has committed. And he shall make full restitution for his wrong, adding a fifth to it and giving it to him to whom he did the wrong..."

(09:03) American Colonies and Lesser Magistrates: Today I finished up looking at a few examples of lesser magistrates by considering the American colonies. Under whose authority were they founded? Did they answer to the king or parliament? What was the phrase "no taxation without representation" all about? And was the American War for Independence a just war?

(01:00) Law of the Day: Leviticus 5:1 – “If anyone sins in that he hears a public adjuration to testify, and though he is a witness, whether he has seen or come to know the matter, yet does not speak, he shall bear his iniquity.”

(09:18) Idolatry Watch: Today I look at two recent clips, one from Vice-President Kamala Harris and the other from Secretary Pete Buttigieg. VP Harris presents a false gospel of vaccines while playing fast and loose with the COVID numbers. Secretary Buttigieg sets a new goal of zero traffic deaths nationwide. Both are examples where idolatry leads to a false gospel of mankind's power and ability. This is the recipe for tyranny.

(01:40) Interview: Today I had the opportunity to interview Brad Lanning, who is running for the 1st Congressional District of Pennsylvania. We discuss his background as well as his reasons for running. We also consider some key topics, including vaccine tracking, minimum wage laws, the Paris Climate Agreement, and concerns about China. Finally, we end the conversation on the topic of human rights, the image of God, and the role of government.

(00:50) Part I: Law of the Day (Unsolved Murders) - "If in the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess someone is found slain, lying in the open country, and it is not known who killed him, then your elders and your judges shall come out, and they shall measure the distance to the surrounding cities..." (Deut. 21:1-9)

(11:33) Part II: Today I consider another example of lesser magistrates, this time during the Protestant Reformation. The Protestants, named for the official legal protest that they submitted to the Emperor, asked for religious liberty. While after years of conflict the Emperor was able to force nearly all of Germany to submit to Catholicism, one city stood alone in defiance. That city was Magdeburg which, through its lesser magistrates, was able to win its religious freedom.

(01:15) Part I: Law of the Day - "You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD." (Lev. 19:18)

(11:05) Part II: Today I look at some historical examples of lesser magistrates. First, I discuss Jehoiada from 2 Kings 11 and his resistance to Athaliah the usurper. Second, I consider the Roman Governor Publius Petronius and his resistance to Emperor Caligula. Both men had no guarantee of success, yet they stood firm in the face of tyranny and certain death, not out of a sense of rebellion, but in order to do the right thing.

Part I: Law of the Day - "When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God.” (Lev. 19:9-10)

(Timestamp 17:25) Part II: Interview with Pastor Matthew Trewhella about his book The Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates
