The Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs has been made aware of a circulating WhatsApp voice note alleging that a toxic substance is being served in drinks, leading to significant adverse health effects. After thorough assessment, the Ministry categorically states that these claims are false and entirely unfounded. At this time, no evidence exists to support the allegations made in the voice note. Preliminary investigations suggest that this voice note may be a resurfaced message from previous years, deliberately or inadvertently reintroduced. Its circulation during the festive season poses the risk of causing unnecessary fear and alarm among the public.
The Substance Abuse Advisory Council Secretariat (SAACS), in partnership with the recently launched Early Warning System (EWS) Committee, has ramped up efforts to protect the public from the growing threat of new psychoactive substances (NPS) during the festive season. Through an intensive public awareness campaign, the initiative aims to educate communities about the dangers of these emerging drugs, reaffirming SAACS's commitment to combating substance abuse and safeguarding public health. With the holiday period often associated with heightened social activity, the campaign underscores the critical need for informed decision-making to prevent harm and promote safer, healthier communities.

Loneliness among seniors is a silent struggle that often goes unnoticed, but it can have a profound impact on emotional well-being. Robert Huggins, Director of the Elderly Affairs Unit within the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs, is shedding light on this pressing issue. In a heartfelt appeal, Huggins emphasized the importance of staying connected with family and friends, urging seniors to combat feelings of isolation by reaching out through phone calls, video chats, or social media. With changing social circles as we age, he highlighted that maintaining regular communication is not just a way to stay in touch—it’s a vital lifeline for emotional health and support.
Given the vital role of effective communication, and in keeping with a renewed and comprehensive Communications Strategy, the Ministry of Equity, Social Justice and Empowerment has hosted a two-day Communications Training Workshop aimed at building capacity amongst social workers. This initiative, developed in partnership with the Canadian University Services Overseas (CUSO International), under the Gender Equality Project, emphasizes the strategic use of media and communication tools to improve service delivery and workplace efficiency.
The interactive training not only supports the Ministry of Equity’s broader Communication Strategy, currently being rolled out in various forms but also equips staff with essential skills to ensure informed representation across all departments.
