Saint Lucia has joined the Caribbean and Latin America’s efforts to eliminate meningitis as a public health threat by 2030. The country is currently hosting the Defeating Meningitis Caribbean Sub-Regional Workshop at the Harbor Club, welcoming representatives from ten Caribbean nations to collaborate on this critical initiative. The workshop, organized by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), is focused on advancing the global Defeating Meningitis by 2030 Roadmap.
The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs and key stakeholders receive capacity building support from UNICEF to help enhance skills in the area of developing and leading Social and Behavior Change (SBC) activities and programmes. The two-day Social and Behaviour Change Communication Training was aimed at developing the skills and knowledge of participants on applying social and behavior change communication approaches when responding to public health and other emergencies. The training also focused on strengthening the capacity of participants to help them design and implement interventions aimed at behavior change. Health Educators, Public Health Nursing Supervisors, Nutritionist, Social Transformation Officers and Representatives from town and city councils, to name a few benefitted from the Social and Behaviour Change Communication training.
Every October to March, the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs notes an increase in individuals experiencing flu-like or respiratory symptoms. Flu symptoms can vary in intensity and include symptoms such as fever, chills and sweats, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, fatigue, headache and in severe cases, shortness of breath. Therefore, the Ministry of Health encourages residents to take preventive measures to reduce respiratory infections.

In a proactive initiative for Diabetes Awareness Month, the Ti-Rocher Castries Wellness Centre focused its Diabetic and Hypertensive Clinic on prevention and care for Diabetes with the aim of empowering individuals to make the best lifestyle choices to manage their disease. The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs is hoping to create a holistic approach to Diabetes prevention and care and wants to ensure individuals adopt healthy habits in an effort to reduce the impact of Diabetes. Participants of the activity were granted the opportunity to receive education on nutrition, health screenings, and eye examinations at NO COST.
