Australia's general practitioners are spending more time on emergencies and patients who should be seeing a specialist.

Those are some of the findings of an annual survey of GPs by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners out today.

The Health of the Nation report also highlights the growing gap in the number of GPs the country needs.
