Can I change the colour or transparency of the route and track line on my GPS?

First of all Ian what is a route and track

So Ian, going back to the original question – Can I change the colour or transparency of the route and track line on my GPS?

Ian – It depends on the make of GPS and planning software

Jon – Looking at the planning software first, lets first look at Garmin BaseCamp

Routes – yes

Jon – So that’s BaseCamp nailed how about the Garmin GPS unit can we change the route and track colour on a Garmin GPS unit>

Route in GPS – always Magenta regardless what it is in Basecamp
Track in GPS – whatever colour you have it on Basecamp

3 – Shift of magnetic North

What is magnetic North?

Shift of magnetic field –

The latest World Magnetic Model was designed to last until 2020, but magnetic north’s rapid and unexpected surge toward Siberia was so great, that researchers had to amend the model early.

News of the magnetic north’s meanderings isn’t exactly new. Researchers figured out in the 1800s that magnetic north tended to drift. Then, in the mid-1990s, it began moving faster, from just over 9 miles (15 kilometres) a year to about 34 miles (55 km) annually.

How will this affect us as –

Core message

The North Pole’s erratic movements are largely the result of Earth’s liquid-iron outer core, known as the core field. (Other factors play a role, too, including magnetic minerals in the crust and upper mantle, as well as electric currents created by the flow of seawater, but these influences are small compared to those from the core field, according to the 2015 report on the World Magnetic Model.)

Today we have a special Podcast, today Garmin have launched the all new GPSMAP66i, the first ever handheld GPS unit from Garmin to incorporate the inReach technology into a outdoor ‘navigational’ GPS.

Don’t worry if none of that makes sense, it hopefully will do so over the coming 30 – 45 minutes and it is such a big change in the world of outdoor GPS navigation we have given the subject a full Podcast all of its own.

· So Andi, we have two pieces of technology here that Garmin have put together in one to make the GPSMAP66i, I think a real game changer.

So, firstly Andi, the GPSMAP66st – What is it and why this unit to incorporate the inReach technology into it?

The GPSMAP66i is based on the GPSMAP66st, so Andi what does to ‘t’ stand for.

Garmin bought Delorme back in February 2016, who created this two-way satellite communication.

Since they bought Delorme Garmin have produced the –

Andi, how exactly does this technology work?

Iridium Sattelite system, the same as SatPhones use

You need a contract to use the inReach technology, these start from £14.99/ month

Pulling both the Garmin GPSMAP66st and the inReach technology into one device.

Launch date – when customers will get the units

What is IPX rating (waterproof rating) – International Protection Marking, IEC standard 60529, sometimes interpreted as Ingress Protection Marking, classifies and rates the degree of protection provided against intrusion (body parts such as hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures

So let’s put the unit to the test then – so we can submerse them for the duration of the test

X – relates to the – Solid particle protection – indicates the level of protection that the enclosure provides against access to hazardous parts (e.g., electrical conductors, moving parts) and the ingress of solid foreign objects

X – means there is no data available to specify a protection rating with regard to this criteria.

7 – relates to – Immersion, up to 1 m depth – Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion).

Test duration: 30 minutes – you can watch it online here

Tested with the lowest point of the enclosure 1000 mm below the surface of the water, or the highest point 150 mm below the surface, whichever is deeper.

SatMap Active 20 – IP68 waterproof & IK7 impact rating

6 – means – Dust tight (Garmin get an x for this – it does not relate to?) – No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact (dust tight). A vacuum must be applied. Test duration of up to 8 hours based on air flow.

8 – Immersion, 1 m or more depth – Test duration: agreement with manufacturer

Depth specified by manufacturer, generally up to 3 m

IK rating (Solely SatMap refer to this) – where “XX” is a number from 00 to 10 indicating the degrees of protection provided by electrical enclosures (including luminaires) against external mechanical impacts

IK07 Protected against 2 joules impact – Equivalent to impact of 0.5 kg mass dropped from 400 mm above impacted surface.

Garmin have tested the GPSMAP66s to the following standard – MIL STD 810G ruggedness for thermal, shock and water performance

Welcome Ian back to the Podcast to talk over some of his FAQ’s, the frequently asked questions he has been asked on his courses over the past month.

This month we don’t just have a FAQ for both Garmin and SatMap handheld units but we also have a FAQ for wearables, these are wrist based GPS devices.

Garmin – with a Topo Pro map card inserted in a GPS, if while in a National Park, why does a GPS with Topo Europe mapping route in a different way to a GPS without Topo Europe mapping and how do you override it?

As mentioned, I had this on the last Clayton course where two guys, Andy Gauci and Allen King came along with a map66 (Andy) and a map66st(Allen). When they created a route on the GPS standing side by side and going to the same place, the map66st calculated route took Allen in a totally different direction at one point. I got Allen to disable the Topo Europe mapping and it then routed as per the Topo Pro map card. Hence it seems that the Topo Europe mapping gets priority in working out a route over the map card.

Satmap – while out on a walk, how do I pause my ActiveXX while I’m having my lunch?
