The Sermon on the Mount is not for the casual listener. This Sermon upsets our world and turns it upside down. This Sermon can only be appreciated and beneficial to the serious, even radical, follower of Jesus Christ. Jesus did the most radical thing imaginable for us – He died on the Cross for our sins so we could be saved by grace and enter Heaven. Our response to His love must be sincere, profound, and whole-hearted.

The Master Teacher, Jesus the Son of God, moves His Sermon on the Mount into action in our lives. In the Beatitudes (5:3-12) He told us what we are to be in our hearts and souls by the grace of God for a “blessed” life. “Poor in spirit…Mourning over sin...Meek and Humble…Hungering after Righteousness…Merciful…Pure in Heart…Peacemakers…Persecuted for Righteousness sake.” With these qualities abiding in your life, now, He tells us what we are to do. We are now ready to be used by God and to be a “blessing” to the world. Yes, in Christ, we are “blessed in order to become a blessing.”

Christian persecution is hostility and ill treatment because of a person’s belief in Christ and the Gospel to the point of prejudice, harassment, imprisonment, or death. The New Testament word for “persecute” literally means “to chase away.” The world does not want Christ, His Gospel, or His followers to be seen or heard – just to go away by departing their faith to be forced to conform to the world or by being eradicated.
