Nothing has ever been as atrocious as when Jesus was betrayed, arrested, beaten, whipped, tried, and eventually crucified as we are told in Luke chapter 22. 

When Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane, the weight of the burden that was upon Him was so great that it squeezed out of Him His own blood

Jesus was going to become the most targeted man of His day and the implications of all that for the disciples were significant. So, it’s not surprising to see Jesus preparing His men as we see in Luke 22:35-38.

If we think we are good enough or strong enough or wise enough or sharp enough on our own, we are headed for some major falls. Maybe the most well-known example of this kind of overconfidence is the Apostle Peter.

In our text in Luke 22, Jesus taught a powerful lesson of servanthood and humility on the night before His death.

The two great barriers to salvation have always been refusal to recognize the need for it and the belief that it can be earned or deserved. It is the first of those two barriers that we encounter this morning in Matthew chapter 9.

Today we consider what could be the most tragic story in all of human history. It's the story of a man who had a privilege only eleven other men have ever had. He was chosen by the Lord Jesus Christ to be one of the twelve disciples, yet he tragically squandered that privilege.

His name was Judas Iscariot.
