We celebrate Reformation Sunday in the Lutheran Church through the lens of the Exodus story—the first of a series of God’s reform movements in history. Moses, like Luther, has started a conversation about faith, but Pharaoh isn’t willing to listen.

What started as just another day for Moses became the moment that he met his maker. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, sets fire to more than a bush—he lights the pilot light of Moses’ own soul.

It’s a rags to riches story as Moses goes from having nothing to having it all—power, influence and protection. In a defining moment of character in the face of injustice, Moses’ life goes down in flames. Forced into exile, Moses becomes a fugitive.

Born an Israelite but adopted as an Egyptian, Moses grows up quickly in the Bible. Moses believes that he is alone and so do his brothers and sisters. Moses has become a slave to his circumstances and so have the Israelites.

The campaign of terror escalated in Egypt. Death threats once spoken in the dark suddenly become a national policy of genocide. And then there is Moses, the child who was delivered from harm in order to become God’s deliverer for the Israelites.

400 years have passed since the death of Joseph and the glory days. A new regime has brought a reversal of fortune for the Israelites. Where are you God? It’s a question we all ask at some point in our lives.

The story of Exodus is both historical and supernatural. It is the means of God’s self revelation and catalyst for the birth of a nation. It is the defining narrative for the rest of the biblical story. It is the gospel that anticipates the Gospel.

Linda Woodbury. Missional living implies long term investment – investment in that which reaps eternal rewards but also a life of fulfillment here on earth. It’s simple but not easy and can’t be done on our own strength or out of our pride.
