Pastor Jon Pedersen. In this Sunday's Gospel lesson, Jesus heals a seemingly impossible case. A woman had been crippled for 18 years and Jesus sets her free. What was her first reaction? It was to praise God.

In Christ, the most important work of forgiveness, healing and reconciliation has been accomplished. Our challenge is to enter that rest—to live out the Sabbath—not just one day, not just on the weekend—but everyday of our lives!

“Those who refuse to rest make resting difficult for everyone else.” Do you agree with this statement? Is there a direct relationship between how we treat ourselves and how we treat others?

While we chase after the tyranny of the urgent, the Lord beckons us to slow down and enjoy what is in front of us. The emergence of the Sabbath is God’s gift of sacred time—a taste of the eternal in the midst of our tendency towards “the daily grind."

Rest. Relaxation. Recreation. Three words that encompass our deepest longings. Three verbs, that in the thick of our chaotic and busy world, most of us struggle to actualize. Three synonyms for Sabbath.

Jon Alexanian. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

Jon Alexanian. Have we developed religious "rules" that prevent us from seeking the work of God happening before us?

We are left with a haunting picture of an angry prophet looking towards Nineveh still sitting in judgment and a compassionate God patiently but persistently nudging him to adopt a different posture. The book ends not with an answer but with a question.

Jonah pulls away but God refuses to let go. Jonah ignores a word from the LORD but the LORD repeats the question. Jonah tries to run but he can’t hide from God’s little object lesson. Jonah has done most of the talking but the LORD will get the last word.
