The Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL) are the farm team of the Detroit Red Wings (NHL). They play out of Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and are currently have a blazing hot record of 22-1-0-1.

Michael Spruit joins Elaine Shircliff on “Graced By Rain” to discuss the beauty of concerts and the Grand Rapids Griffins. 

Spruit is a multimedia creator from Michigan who spent eight years working in professional hockey—first with the Grand Rapids Griffins from 2014 to 2018, where he was part of the team during their 2017 Calder Cup championship run, and then with the Detroit Red Wings from 2018 to 2021, traveling with the team and creating behind-the-scenes content.

These days, he leads multimedia projects for LLYC, a marketing agency with an office in Grand Rapids, but his other passion is live music. Michael’s been to more than 65 concerts and seen over 130 different bands—from Foo Fighters and Green Day to local favorites like Mustard Plug. Recently, he started tracking his “Concert Alphabet” , where he’s working his way through the alphabet, one live show at a time.  With only V and X remaining.

Whether it’s hockey or live music, he’s all about capturing moments that bring people together.

The Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL) are the farm team of the Detroit Red Wings (NHL). They play out of Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and are currently on a hot streak,starting the season 8-0. 

The Grand Rapids Griffins and Wilkes Barre Scranton Penguins are off to a blazing hot start to the 2025-26 season.

A 5-0 start for the Griffins is the franchise record for hottest start to a season. The only other season they accomplished this feat was 2004-05.

The Penguins are on a massive 7-0 streak to start the season.

Both have huge games coming up in the last week of October. Their hopes are to keep the streak alive.

On Monday, October 28, 2025, I sat down with Wilkes Barre Scranton Penguins beat reporter Sam Wismer of Olde City Sports to discuss what it's like to cover a wagon of a team. We also discussed a few other AHL and hockey related things !

Earlier this season, I had Nick Harrington (s6e2) and Travis Focht (S6E5) from Hockeytown West Podcast on to discuss the farm teams of the Detroit Red Wings : the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL) and the Toledo Walleye (ECHL).

During the course of our recordings, we realized some of the fun parts would be best in a second episode!
