“Despite their pretensions and anxieties, human beings do not carry the burden of the world, Atlaslike, on their shoulders. The dominion belongs to God, who is free to open up unexpected possibilities even when people find themselves in what seems to be a no-exit situation. Faith in God’s overruling sovereignty, then, liberates people from misplaced faith in human efforts to plan, shape, and control the future.” (B. Anderson, Contours of Old Testament Theology, 234)
Two different dimensions of God’s saving action were made available to Israel. Whereas the exodus provided deliverance from the sins of others (this is actualized in the festivals [see Lev. 23:42-43]), in the sacrifices, a provision is made for the forgiveness of one’s own guilt.(T. Fretheim, The Pentateuch, 121)
