Such is a church where church members don't grow spiritually. It follows that if we grow physically, we need to grow spiritually. We all start out as babies. Some never grow much. God loves us enough to require that we grow and he gives us the resources to change. God, of course, can simply transform us instantly, but he has chosen to change us by the work of the Holy Spirit, through gifted church leaders and members. Means that seem ordinary are the glorious realities of God's provision to you. Ignore this and you end up with churches filled with babies who think they are going deep into the things of God. They are easily entertained and are not concerned about exchanging true growth for superficial formalism. Such churches are so easily swept away by the latest wrong ideas. The church is God's design for your growth, when it functions in the way God has designed it to function. Speaking the truth in love, relationships marked by love and truth- this is what all of the activities of the church are intended to cultivate. Sadly, this is a rare thing. So pray that this growth will start with you.

Overview: Answer this question, -What does the local church need-- It turns out Paul had an answer to this question. He desires for all church members to know God. A church is more successful that cultivates a relationship with God, rather than one that has a myriad of ministries. Knowing God is the most wonderful experience for the believer. A person may have memorised whole articles on honey, but have never tasted it. The person who has tasted it is in a far preferable position. The problem with most blind people is not that they don't have eyes, but that those eyes can't see. Paul is concerned that we are like deaf people at a symphony concert. God saved you to see and hear, tasted and savour God- God didn't choose spiritual navy seals to protect this treasure- He chose us- God created you to show you His mercy forever. That is the church's purpose--so what we need is to see this- This is what God has chosen to do with His vast power- He has chosen to make us His inheritance- He has chosen to make us His inheritance- Christians adore the body of Christ- The day will come when the very angels will step backwards, astounded by the body of Christ- And what God wants most is for the church to lay hold of this now- Gratefully, Paul explains how we can come to experience what God desires us to have.

Overview: What specifically does God say about whether a woman should preach and teach in the church- What about a woman functioning as a pastor- Is there a distinction in God's eyes between men and women in this regard- Yes, there is a distinction. Paul shows how distracting the angry rivalry between the men was in the church. But the women were also distracting. They should also abandon the beauty competition and fix their hearts and minds on worship. Both men and women can distort worship to make themselves look good. The joint motive to worship God should drive both the way we conduct ourselves and clothe ourselves. Beauty in both is beauty of the heart. Fortunately, Paul explains what he means. Women can display this beauty by avoiding responsibilities as teachers in the corporate worship of the saints. Part of the reason for this was because God made men to lead in a loving way. Women tend to take leadership roles as men fail to. Yet what is most striking in God's design is that women are not deprived of teaching in the church. They have the privilege of being mothers who have more influence on their sons than any other single person in that son's world. A faithful mother goes a long way to prepare a faithful man for the pulpit, and in a manner of speaking, speaks through his lips. This is a privilege godly women should embrace as a joy rather than a burden.

Overview: You can be so sure of yourself before God that you are not even shaken out of your confidence by the rebuke of God Himself- Different societies have certain unspoken customs that are not noticed until they are missing. A Pharisee invites Jesus to his house, yet strangely, this religious man doesn't show Jesus the common acts of courtesy. This is how confident he is in his own perceived importance. His behaviour is insulting to Jesus, yet Jesus doesn't take offense. At the same time, a woman in moral ragis is in the Pharisee's house. She sees the insults and she weeps before Jesus, wetting his feet with her tears. Against custom, she lets down her hair and wipes His feet with it. Enchanting was her act of worship. But this tightly-buttoned Pharisee is unhappy with this inappropriate display. Jesus is showing the stark contrast between mere religious self-confidence and true consuming worship. In fact, He even begins to criticize Jesus in his heart- What a degree of self-deceptive self-confidence is this- He is acting as if he can judge God Himself- If you don't sense your need for salvation, God could visit you at your house and you, like this Pharisee, would miss him-

Overview: There is hardly a sin that is more difficult to overcome than the sin of self-righteousness- it is like bad breath--difficult to smell for yourself. An author once asked what it would look like if Satan took over a city. Possibly the blackest of sin, but also, very possibly, the cleanest of environments. No crime, porn, lawlessness, with churches and preachers, but without Christ. A city of people who consider themselves righteous, yet without any righteousness. This is Simon's issue. He feels he has been forgiven little, therefore his gratitude for his salvation is not as great as that of the woman who can see the magnitude of her sins that have been forgiven. That is why he loves so little. Do you love little- Could it be that you have the impression that you have been forgiven little- To see this is to have hope. This can be forgiven. There are some signs that you are self-righteous. Are you content to know about Jesus or are you hungry to know him personally- The former was Simon, the latter the weeping woman. Are you content to satisfy yourself rather than finding satisfaction in Jesus- Do you consider yourself set apart from categories of people of whom you consider less worthy of your attention- Rather than wondering how he could help the crying woman, Simon is disgusted by her. This is both an encouragement and a warning to us. Simon presumed he was the person who owed less because the woman was obviously very sinful. But exactly the opposite is true. Gratefully, this too is something you can repent of, find forgiveness from God, and begin to work on a new life of beautiful humility.
