A common theme as people react to many technology advances is fear. Our instinct as humans is to be afraid of what we don't know, and our brains are programmed to see something unexpected as a threat before it can process the opportunity. This is how many people see a world filled with robots: a future to be feared. This ThrowForward Thursday episode invites you to come and imagine a world made better by brilliant robots. Next week, in our new approach in Season 3, we'll help you apply these ideas and learn to think like a futurist - overcoming the fear instinct and learning to see opportunities.

In Season 3 of ThrowForward Thursday, we will be helping you to apply our mini future scenarios. Every second week, we'll introduce a new idea from the future, as we normally do. The week after, we will revisit the scenario, extracting the principles and helping you see how to apply it to your industry and work. Today, we look back at the last week's "Smart Sleep" episode (watch it here if you haven't done so yet: https://youtu.be/XNd4YKfdGnw), and find the principles of data analytics, personalisation and optimisation.

ACTION STEPS: * Whatever your role in your current business, show your team the first video on Smart Sleep, and then guide them through a conversation about the three key principles we extracted: data analytics, personalisation and optimisation. * Ask yourself and your team: - What data would we find incredibly valuable if we could collect it? - If we had that data, what types of personalisation could we develop for the people who use what we do (whether they're customers, clients, business partners, business units, colleagues, etc)? - How could we improve their lives by being more proactive, optimising what we do and pre-empting their requests? Having conversations like this is how you will learn to "think like a futurist" and develop strategic imagination. These are essential skills for you and your whole team to use in our fast moving, ever changing world.
Technologies that not only track our sleep patterns, but can also proactively manage our sleep environments could revolutionise the way we sleep, and help us to improve this vital aspect of our health and wellbeing. From smart pillows that adjust to stop us snoring, to sensors that adjust lighting, temperature and white noise, we actually already have all the technology we need to do this. This is the first ThrowForward Thursday in our new 2023 series, and if you watch the video you'll see we've upgraded our green screen studio setup. Next week you can join me to learn how to apply this scenario to your work environment. This will be the new approach to ThrowForward Thursdays, with a future scenario one week and an application session the next.

Every week for the last year and a half our team has produced a short video that highlights a future trend or disruptive force that could change the world. The invitation to you and your team is to watch this video and imagine how it might impact your industry, your market and bring threats and opportunities to your products and services. Sometimes that's easy and obvious to do. But most often it isn't. Our brains are just not programmed for Strategic Imagination. And so, from February we are going to change the format of these Throwforward Thursday videos. One week we will share a future trend as we normally do; the next week, we will unpack the implications of that trend and show you how you can apply it to your organisation or function. We believe that the ability to do this is an absolutely essential skill for every member of your team to develop. This is not just for senior leaders or people who develop the strategy - it's a skill for everyone. We hope that you'll take time to watch our videos each week, and discuss them with your team - not just for some ideas of what the world of the future will look like, but also to intentionally develop your strategic imaginations, and unlock your team's foresight and future-awareness. You won't regret it, and it will take less than 10 minutes a week to do. Here's a quick video explaining the idea, and hopefully getting you excited for this new approach we will be taking from next month. By the way, as always, if you'd like to send us a message, or have a suggestion or request for a specific topic or trend, please use http://www.askabouthefuture.com to leave a voice, video or text note for our team.

Apologies for the delay in posting this video meant for 12 Jan 2023. I've actually been in hospital myself, and my team was on holiday until today. This was pre-recorded, but the content strangely appropriate as we consider how to proactively and preventatively take care of ourselves. We don't have to jump too far into the future to imagine a healthcare system that integrates smart technology with AI and machine learning to produce health care apparatus, some as simple as plasters and bandages, that are able to provide significant upgrades to the care we are currently able to receive while injured. But the point of this video is less about impressing you with visions of medical futures, and more about reminding you that seemingly small and technologically easy advances in almost every industry are going to make very big differences to our lives in the next few years. The rest of the 2020s is going to be a mind blowing blur of these small, but world-changing, advances. What can you imagine for your industry, and which of those ideas could you start to experiment with in 2023?

In 2021, a Dutch supermarket chain, Jumbo, created a special checkout line - it was designed to be slower and give people the opportunity to chat to each other and the cashier. It has received rave reviews, and Jumbo is now rolling it out to all their stores. Part of the reason for this is that many people are lonely. So much so that the UK government a few years ago created a "Minister for Loneliness". Japan has something similar. More people live alone than ever before - although being alone and being lonely are two different things, of course. It's possible to be lonely in a crowd. Which is why society and companies need to think of ways to engage with people who feel lonely and need some connection. Companies should provide options: (1) automate my engagement with you - I don't want to connect; (2) give me a minimal human touch, or (3) I choose to chat. How would this apply to your industry? Would it be something your customers would pay a premium for? Or could it just be a wonderful societal contribution you could make?

As we spend this last week of December battling to remember what day of the week it is, and finally finishing off the leftovers from our Christmas meal, here's a quick thought about food in the future. We will definitely be able to get more and more nutrients from pills, smart medicine and artificial sources. Part of the drive to do this is to reduce our impact on the planet by way of factory farming. But, at the same time, food is not merely about nutrition - it's also an experience and a time of potential human interaction. That will never go away, but maybe in the future we will be more intentional about which version of meals we choose: some will be for nutrition only, and some will be for enjoyment and socialisation. Whichever versions you still have left in 2022, the team at ThrowForward Thursday wishes you all the very best for the new year. We will see you next week in 2023.

We know that smart glasses, which include VR, AR and XR functionality and heads up displays are coming. But what if those glasses could also look back at us, and especially assess our physical and emotional state using biometric feedback from our eyes?

We've talked about alternative and green energy solutions before on Throwforward Thursday (episode 6 - https://youtu.be/rI76SEIT2Ms and episode 24 - https://youtu.be/3nck4-WLYHo). Today, we look not at the future but at something that happened last week as we got proof that nuclear fusion is possible. We knew it theoretically, and have had small successes in tokamak reactors around the world, but last week was absolute proof that we are on the right track. Here are some links to the announcements: * https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/what-a-breakthrough-in-nuclear-fusion-technology-means-for-the-future-of-clean-energy * https://futurism.com/physicists-breakthrough-proves-fusion-power-possible
In 2023 the world is facing an energy crunch. But by the end of this decade we are likely to have significant long-term, cheap and clean energy available all around the world. The future is coming faster than we imagined, and solving big problems in ways we couldn't have imagined.

Apologies for the late posting of this episode of our weekly series into future trends. Today we imagine that we might have dedicated 3D print shops, or maybe 3D printers in local building supplies stores, that will be able to print out any 3D design for you overnight. A few decades from now we will probably all have multipurpose 3D printers in our homes, but between now and then, we will be able to go to local 3D print shops to do a quick print out of anything we need. Email them the design file, drop by later today to collect it. Simple. The link to Episode 8 on 3D printing is: https://youtu.be/G1BXDAMAOAc
