  • ThrowForward Thursday 180: What if our Medicines Stop Working?

In Season 6 of ThrowForward Thursday, we are revisiting some of our previous predictions and finding out what's happening in the world right now. This one is scary.

In Episode 66 (see https://youtu.be/V-b-U2Zf4V4 ) we talked about the end of antibiotics. Just this past month, in October 2025, the World Health Organization released a research report on antibiotic and AMR resistance, and it's getting worse and worse (see: https://www.who.int/news/item/13-10-2025-who-warns-of-widespread-resistance-to-common-antibiotics-worldwide ).

We need to urgently use fewer antibiotics, giving science a chance to keep up with the mutations of the diseases we are fighting. We need to think not just about "quick fixes" for our own illnesses, but more societally and systemically about healthcare.

  • ThrowForward Thursday 179: Cape Town Marathon Cancelled

Sport can't fight weather The 2025 edition of the Cape Town Marathon was cancelled due to strong winds making the course unsafe. It's not the first major sporting event to be affected by weather; and it won't be the last. Back in 2020, I was due to run the London Marathon. It was cancelled due to Covid, and we were encouraged to run a 42.2km distance in the 24 hours of the day of the marathon to earn our finisher's medal. I did that in the Covid-emptied streets of Johannesburg. We've talked about this before in ThrowForward Thursday:

    • Ep 11: Climate change am-dram moment - https://youtu.be/J6QurefheZo
    • Ep 42: Olympics and climate change - https://youtu.be/pgl9UMFPcd4
Organisers of major sporting events will need to plan for weather related disruptions - not as Plan B or C, but as an expected Plan A. This is what our team at TomorrowToday calls an 'Elephant in the Boardroom' - a known, high impact issue that people are not yet taking seriously enough. The cancellation of a major marathon, impacting tens of thousands of people, is a reminder that this is our new normal.

  • ThrowForward Thursday 178: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Post Truth World

What if the truth could be edited? In a world of AI deepfakes, fake news, and manipulated media, how do we know what's real anymore? Blend science fiction and foresight in this mind-bending episode of ThrowForward Thursday, inspired by The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Douglas Adams' classic story predicted today's world - crowdsourced "truths," social networks, and reality distortion fields long before they existed.

In this episode, Graeme unpacks what The Hitchhiker's Guide can teach us about:

    • - AI-generated misinformation and deepfakes
    • - The manipulation of truth in media and politics
    • - Why scepticism and curiosity are leadership superpowers
    • - How to lead with clarity when facts are contested

If you're a leader, educator, or curious thinker trying to make sense of our post-truth world, this one's for you.

    What You'll Learn

    • - How Douglas Adams foresaw our information-saturated future
    • - The connection between AI, social media, and "reality distortion fields"
    • - Ways to stay sceptical without losing trust or hope
    • - How to build credibility and clarity in confusing times
    • - Why humour, humility, and courage matter in leadership today

  • ThrowForward Thursday 176: Deep Fakes Revisited

Deep fakes have been around for a while - in fact, way back in 2020, I was one of the first people I knew to feature in a deep fake video (it wasn't very good, but it was a sign of things to come). The era of fake videos has arrived much faster than we thought we would. It's here, right now. We need to learn how to navigate a world in which we cannot trust what we hear, read or see. It's sad, but it's the reality (or is it real at all?). This week, we revisit some of our predictions about the future of deep fakes and fake news and show you what's happening right now. Watch these three episodes from our archives:

    • Episode 4: Deep Fakes: https://youtu.be/vs8SAdD1KXs
    • Episode 94: AI generated news: https://youtu.be/W0TGnyB5EgE
    • Episode 122: Digital copies of ourselves: https://youtu.be/6ITWYpC4Fho
Join us next week to find out six things we can do about it, and how we can live successfully in a post-truth world.

  • ThrowForward Thursday 174: Imagine - end of 2024 message

Imagine... the future is imaginable. And our imaginations help to set the tone for how we engage with the future, and the world around us. So, at the end of 2024, let's imagine the best possible future we can - whatever that might mean for you. For me, it would be a world without war. Thank you for your support and feedback on our scenarios over the past year. We plan to come back in the new year with a whole new format for these scenarios - we are excited to share that with you. But first... take a break. Have a refreshing and rejuvenating holiday, and we will see you in 2025.

  • ThrowForward Thursday 173: CEOs are not safe

On December 4, 2024, the CEO of one of America's largest healthcare insurers was shot dead on the streets of Manhattan. Angry people, living in a world that is filled with inequality and feeling squeezed on every side, will eventually snap. This is not something we want, nor is it a call to arms. But it is a possible future scenario that CEOs of large companies might need to be as careful of their personal security as many politicians currently are.

The antidote is to build future-proof businesses that see doing good as good for business. This isn't just a cute tagline - it is a core pillar of the DNA of a future-proof business.

  • ThrowForward Thursday 172: A Data Center sues town for all its water

It could happen. Sometime in the future. Data centres use an incredible amount of electricity and water. Towns that incentivise these data centres to locate nearby for jobs and tax benefits might find themselves dealing with unrealistic demands for power and water - to the point where a data centre could sue the town to continue providing them with water even if it means the people living in the town get cut off. For more details of just how much power and water data centres use, listen to Paris Marx's 4 part mini series on the Tech Won't Save Us Podcast: https://techwontsave.us/episode/241_data_vampires_going_hyperscale_episode_1

  • ThrowForward Thursday 171: The 15 hour work week

Nearly 100 years, the famous economist John Maynard Keynes predicted that by 2030 we would all be working just 15 hours a week. If only, right?

What went wrong? There is an answer, but you're probably not going to like it. We need to change the whole system to ensure we are not crushed by a system that seeks relentless productivity, endless activity and soul sucking workloads. Maybe the 15 hour work week is an idealistic fantasy. Or maybe it's a motivating goal to drive a change in our current world of work?
