Our guest for season 4 of "Everything I know About Me" is one of the most formidable and successful footballer players Scotland has ever produced - Graeme Souness. Graeme was interviewed over 2 days in December 2023 where he opened up about his childhood in the pre-fabs of Edinburgh all the way through to the present day via all of his achievements but also the tragedies and controversies he has endured.
In today’s episode, we hear about arguably the most tumultuous time in Graeme’s life and career when he took over as manager of Liverpool from his friend Kenny Dalglish, two years on from the Hillsborough Disaster.
He talks us through the fears he faced when he needed a life-saving heart operation which was then followed by a huge lapse of judgement when he gave an interview about his operation and recovery which appeared on the front page of the Sun on the third anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. He talks about how he regrets not resigning and how the mistake still haunts him and how he will apologise for it until the day he dies.
He also talks about his defining flag-planting moment as manager of Galatasaray and then how his career as a football manager ended with him being unceremoniously sacked by letter.
