  • Episode 32: Seattle Sports Breaking Records at The Masters and in the MLB

    Current Events

Seahawks: Did we mention Bobby Wagner re-signed with the Seahawks? That gives them 5 future HoFers on the squad
Huskies corner! Did we say Keion Brooks Jr. was leaving UW next year? No we didn't. He's coming back! He was celebrated at Senior Night so we all assumed he was gone. We were wrong. Huskies still have 4 scholarship spots available, the Tyee Club should spread some NIL money around
The Masters: Seattle Native, who grew up playing Jefferson Golf Course, made history as the oldest player to make the cut at the masters
Storm select Jordan Horston out of Tennessee; average 16 points; 7 rebs; 3 assists; and 2 steals in 27 mins per game... 20 pts a game and close to 10 rebs if given Caitlin Clark Mins)
What's Kraken!? The Kraken clinched their first playoff berth in the franchise's storied history last Thursday with a dominant win over the Arizona Coyotes at home. My brother got to ride the zamboni before the game and I got to witness it.
    | There were multiple fights during the game and it was clear the Coyotes weren't trying to win so much as they were trying to hurt the Kraken. One guy took off his skate and tried to stab somebody (Happy Gilmore reference)
    | The Kraken played the Coyotes again and beat them handily, again. Played Vegas on Tuesday night and lost. Could have overtaken the Kings for the 3-spot in the Pacific Division. Final game of the season is Thursday night at home against the Golden Knights
    | While you're at it, look up the Coyotes home stadium. The phrase "poverty franchise" gets thrown around a lot on the internet by sports fans trolling their rivals, but the Coyotes embody that to their core.
    |
    Main Event |
The Seattle Mariners are kind of good and kind of bad.
     | First, a recap. They won their series in Cleveland over the weekend but did not sweep. They went 3-4 vs the Guardians and don't play them again this season...so they lose that tiebreaker when it comes time for playoff seeding/homefield.
     | They didn't sweep because they lost a 12 inning game on Sunday. They took a 6-5 lead in top12 but Murfee started the bottom 12th IBBing Jose Ramirez, the winning run, and then throwing a wild pickoff that let both runners advance. One basehit later, the game was over.
     | Now they're at Wrigley and lost a heartbreaker, coughing up a 7-0 lead and eventually losing 14-9.
     | - 0-3 in extra innings this year.
     | - 1-4 in games that were decided by one run OR went to extra innings. They were 36-24 is those games last year and it pretty much made the entire difference in their season..
     | - Why the regression? Well, to start with the relievers are either pitching poorly or injured. Andres Munoz is the latest pitcher to hit the IL with shoulder stiffness. There is no hard diagnosis, so it's unlikely he misses significant time but the Sonoran Smoke was crucial to our success last year.
     | - Logan Gilbert also had a sketchy outing in Cleveland over the weekend. He threw 81 pitches through 4+ innings and got taken out when it was apparent he'd lost significant control and velocity. His FB, regularly sitting 95-97, was in the low 90s. Per USS Mariner Marc on twitter, Gilbert had 1 FB last year at or below 92. He's not on the IL but did we mention midway through last year he was leading the league in pitches thrown? Concerning.
     | - Now for the good part! France, Suarez and Raleigh are one of the best triple threats in the league right now. France and Suarez particularly are tearing it up, batting .330/.370/.480 combined. Raleigh is batting 30 points higher BA than he did last year, and it's
     | not even the elimination of the shift that's doing it. He's hitting it the opposite field 32% of the time vs 22% last year. His soft contact % is up significantly but that will likely correct itself during the course of the season. Th

  • Episode 31: Seattle Mariners are the Most Profitable Team in the MLB

Ask us a Question for the show!
    https://www.latenightinseattle.com/ask-us-a-question

    Current Events:
    1) Husky Corner: Women's basketball team made a cinderella run to the WNIT Fab Four; Freshman phenom Keyon Menifield announced his intent to enter the transfer portal. He was the Dawgs best returnign player before that announcement
    2) The Big Dance: The Huskies won it all! How did your bracket do? After beating UCLA in dramatic fashion to make the Elite Eight, Gonzaga got absolutely rinsed by UConn. Go Huskies.
    3) Kraken play Phoenix on Thursday. Win and they clinch their first playoff berth in franchise history (2 years lol). I'll be at the game with my brother and he gets to ride the Zamboni.
    | I want to revisit my previous hot take (refresher: I argued that the Kraken would be better off as a road team in the playoffs. Kraken have 3rd most road points in the league. My argument holds true.
    | PEE WEE Preschool is over for the year. Maybe ever? I'm glad we all got to learn a little bit together.

Main Event | The Seattle MARINERS
    | Opening Day was last Thursday, M's beat the Guardians 3-0, Brash embarrassed Jose Ramirez, luckily it was a 1-game series so there is nothing else to talk about there...jk
    | - Team's performance so far. Top of order vs. bottom of order;
    | ***DH and SS performance is notable;
    | ***new additions have been a mixed bag so far.
    | How is the pitching?
    | - Robbie Ray is on the 2-week IL. DISCUSSION POINT: If his injury winds up taking him out for a longer, how should the Mariners proceed? Do we have the arms right now? Or will we need to transact?

V Robby's Hot Take (5 second intro music... 30 seconds w/ 2 mins of discussion and banter) |
Every year, Forbes releases its list of Most Profitable MLB Teams. They do this with each major sport, but the 2023 profitability rankings are particularly interesting to this podcaster.

    4) Lastly, who do you think will win the Master's? Aside from Rahm, Rory and Scottie Scheffler, who is your dark horse pick to win the Green Jacket? |
    5) Passover begins in an hour or so, what is your "favorite" Plague of Egypt?

  • Episode 30: Geno Smith Signs 3 year/$75M contract with $30M in Incentives

    SEATTLE SPORTS ROUNDUP

Mariners: Watch your head I saw a pig fly by...Jarred Kelenic leads Cactus League in homeruns. To go along with Prelander Berroa, look up Bryce Miller...dude is nasty. |
UW Huskies: Pistols at high noon! Dawgs/Buffs part tres at noon tomorrow to kick off Pac 12 championship. Dawgs need to run the table to get a tourney bid.  |
1 min | Huskies baseball boys batted in a bushel! Won their series vs. Norther Colorado 47-8, including a 32-7 win last friday. |
    | Pitcher Kiefer Lord earned National Pitcher of the Week honors after retiring all 18 batters he faced against UNC on Saturday. Pretty nasty stuff. |
Kraken just love streaking. After a 3-game losing skid thye've won their last 4. square off against the mighty ducks of anaheim tonight. Jared McCann has become the first 30 goal scorer in franchise HISTORY! |
    | They have 6 more games against the top 6 teams in the West, including 3 against Central Division leading Dallas Stars. They're tied for 3rd in the pacific now and with a good run can work their way back into a home ice advantage in the 1st round. |

    Main Event | GENO |
    -Big, incentive-laden contract for the former-journeyman |
    - What're your thoughts about the deal on its own? With regards to the team's larger cap space picture? With regards to the draft? |
    - Should the Seahawks still consider drafting a QB at 5 overall? What value does the 5th pick have if they can't get Jalen Carter or Will Anderson? They need DL, LB and interior O Line; two of those shouldn't be top 5 picks |

    V Robby's Hot Take
They have 45 road points but only 33 home points. 21 road wins is 2nd only to the New Jersey Devils, who have 23. It might be in the team's best on-ice interest to wind up a 6 seed than 3 or 4 in the west, but is it in the franchise's? |  |

    1) would you rather: Every round of golf is free for the rest of your life (you can play any golf coruse you want, including Augusta) but you can never watch a baseball game on tv or in-person again? Or would you rather have diamond club season tickets for the next 5 years but you can never golf again?
2)What is your Jared Kelenic Predictions by end of year? Cut? Minor League? Traded? All-Star? or MVP? etc.
    3) if your prediction of kelenic is correct? How far will the Mariners get?

    Current Events
Dame 71 points: Made 420 feet worth of shots. 3rd most 60-point games in NBA history, Behind Wilt and Kobe, ahead of MJ LeBron and everyone else.
    XFL recap:  SeaDragons hosted BattleHawks
PeeWee Preschool. You know what it is!
    | Robby:
Geno News: Jets wrote him off, he didn't write back...now they're double-texting! Jets interested in Geno. Also, apparently Russ wanted Pete fired and Pete had a genuine, sweet response when asked about it.
What's Kraken?!... 3 game losing streak. Two terrible losses sandwich a barn burner against the Bruins, which we lost 6-5. Not much to say here. They're playing really poorly right now. PP% bottom third in the league, PK% 2nd to last. 5 v 5 they're pretty good.

Main Event | SPRING TRAINING IS IN FULL SWING (PUN UNINTENDED)
Evan White bomb. What a difference it'd make to have him on the big league roster. Ty France DHing would be sublime.
Kelenic 2 HR day against the Royals. Another youngin who would change things up considerably (not that we haven't mentioned that before)

Some names you might not know: Prelander Berroa. He's the next Matt Brash. "Donnie Walton for Prelander Berroa might have been the worst trade of 2022 and its not really close." One AL scout said. He's 22, played pro ball since he was 17, and was smoking fools in Everett last year.
    | In that Royals game, we lost, and a young man named Jonah Dipoto got the save. That's right, Jerry's son pitched against his pop's ball club and succeeded. Really cool story.

  • Episode 28: Seahawks to Sign Geno for $20M, w/ $10M in Guarantee to be featured in Beacon Plumbing Commercials?!

    Current Events
Seattle Mariners: Pitchers and catchers have reported. There are Evan White sightings. Everything is soon to be happening

Husky Hoops: Last we checked in, lady Dawgs were getting the sap off their hands from some light lumber janing of Stanford. Since then, they've continued their hot streak and currently project as "Last 4 out" in NCAA tournament. Gentlemen Dawgs swept Oregon schools at home behind massive performances from Keiyon Menifield.

Seahawks: Big week for DK Metcalf. Viral video (ad?) of a 100 inch vertical (lol), wins NBA celebrity all-star game MVP dunking all over the place (nice) and then posts about getting drug tested (lol lame).

Hockey: PeeWee Preschool. You know what it is!

What's Kraken?! 3-4-1 since the all-star break, they'ev slid down to 3rd in the Pacific standings. If playoffs started today, they'd be in, but they need to turn it on down the stretch. Grubauer has turned it on in February. He's 3-1-1 and is outperforming his career averages.
-Matty Beniers came back from his injury with a 4-game pointless streak, has 1 goal and 3 assists in his last 3 games.
-Recap of our last main event....Kraken only got 3 points on that road trip. We predicted 5-7 points. A far cry from their 7-game loss-less road trip in December, they're not playing their best hockey right now.

    Main Event
Sea Dragons! RAWR! Burninating the XFL!
Josh Gordon Playing at Lumen Field
Daniel Jones ejected!?!? Wait, not that Daniel Jones

Ask a Lightning Round Question Here: https://www.latenightinseattle.com/ask-us-a-question

    Current Events:
    1) Mariners: By my accounting, we managed to shoehorn the Mariners into every show this winter...and we're not stopping now! Non-roster invitees were announced and boy are there some names on there. Top prospects Harry Ford/Emerson Hancock will be there, as will veteran P's Sadler, Milone, Williams, Sheffield
    2) Husky Hoops. DOWN GOES THE TREE!!! Husky womens hoops pulled off one of the biggest upsets in program history, beating Stanford 72-67 at home this weekend. It snapped an 11-game losing streak against the Cardinal and makes for a huge resume builder for a dawgs team that's 10-5 in conference play.
    | The Dawgs were lead by diaper dandy Elle Ladine's 21 points but it was local hooper and former-Garfield standout Dalayah ("Duh-LAY-uh") Daniels who sunk 2 clutch FT's with 8 seconds left to seal the Dub. In Dalayah's words, they're some Dawgs out there!
    3) PeeWee Preschool. You know what it is!

Main Event | Look ahead to Kraken opponents coming up:
    | Five game road trip. Last road trip they went 7-0. Fewer than 5 points would be a failure, 6 points or more would be a good portent for the future.
    already losing

    Upcoming Road Trip:
-Islanders: Islanders are slight favorites; they're a defensive squad who really doesn't score. Nearly dead last in PP%. PK is among the best in the league, should be a good test.
-Devils:  3rd best team in the east
-Rangers: 5th best team in the east.
-Flyers: terrible squad. Sloppy, lots of penalties and a great chance to improve PP%
-Jets: 2nd best in the west, could be a playoff preview

    Current Events:
Mariners: Anotha one...M's sign another former All-Star with Tommy La Stella joinng the squad. He's a past-his-prime contact and speed guy who no longer has contact or speed skills. They signed him for peanuts and he's expected to play somewhat of a utility role despite the presence of Dyland Moore. As recently as 2019 he slashed 301/388/611 to start a season, but a broken leg and residual soft tissue injuries has severely hampered his abilities. MEH. |  |  |  |
UW Basketball: Woof! Dawgs complete the season sweep of Colorado! Swept Bay Area schools at home and then lost big time to Utah. All in all it seems the team still has no offensive identity beyond "Let Keion Brooks cook" and the defensive philosophy is "let them shoot 3's but don't box out". THe Dawgs currently sit 7th in the PAC and will need to catch fire if they have any intention of making the tourney. Home wins against ASU and/or Zona this week sure would help.\ |  |  |  |
Hockey 101: 1-2-3 eyes on me, 1-2 eyes on you! PeeWee Preschool: Each week Adam and I are going to learn a new stat, phrase or concept in hockey and teach it to eachother so we can both sound qualified to talk about Seattle's newest pro sports team.
What's Kraken?!...is also a regular segment on the hockey radio broadcasts. But we do it too. Much has happened since we last spoke. The Kraken continued their winning streak during the longest road trip of the year, coming home with 8-games in a row under their belt. That all came crashing down when they hosted Perennial Stanley Cup Finalist TB Lightning in their first home game in 3 weeks. Since the streak ended they've lost 3 of 4 and host the Canucks on Wednesday.
    | 9th fewest PPG in the league, 3rd quartile in PP%. THye're among the least penalized teams in the league which is good, because they have 2nd worst PK% at 70%. They're abysmal on both ends of the ice when it's not 5 on 5. short handed play is all about chemistry, something a 2nd year franchise team obviously sorely lacks.

    Main Event
How Lucky are Seattle Sports fans right now?
-Aaron Goldsmith named a finalist for the St Louis Cardinals tv broadcast gig; he politely declines.
    - Hawks shock the region by finishing over .500 and making the playoffs
    - Mariners made it rain and ended the drought
    - Husky football was the most pleasant surprise going 11-2 and winning the Alamo Bowl.
-All in all it's been a very blessed year for Seattle sports fans and we can't wait to carry it into 2023.

    2) Huskies Corner! Woof! No news is good news on the Rome Odunze front. Meanwhile, UW mens bball struggled in the desert, good thing they were only down there for 4 nights, not 40 years. Tough loss to UA in Tucson was followed up by an 8 point loss in the valley
