Grand Sumo Breakdown

Happy New Year! 2019 is in the books so it's time for our annual awards show. We narrowed down some of our favorite bits from the last year to discuss and give our highly prestigious awards to. In between, we share some New Year's resolutions too.

A few months back we recorded and subsequently lost a fun little bonus episode of sumo trivia in Ryan's favorite format: the TV game show knock-off. Please enjoy this show once thought lost and feel free to send complaints and angry ramblings to us on social media or leave us a message at 805-613-SUMO (7866).

Ryan tries his best at inventing new mathematical formulas to justify his Hatsu banzuke prediction and Jake tries his best to figure out what the hell Ryan is talking about.

Not the most drama we've ever seen in a yusho race, but still plenty to talk about for the last basho of the year. From the wreckage that is the ozeki rank, to the resurgent debate about the height of the dohyo, join us for a recap of Kyushu. We have one more ad from our audio book sponsor at 1:12:01, and you can leave us a message at 805-613-SUMO (7866).

The boys from Akaguma-beya are back from their time off after a thrilling playoff last basho. It's time for them to grit their teeth and train harder than ever if they want to get their feet in the door in Juryo. If you like this little side project of ours, send us feedback on social media or leave us a message at 805-613-SUMO (7866).

This episode features:

• Akaguma-oyakata 赤熊, the former dai-yokozuna and coach of Akaguma-beya
• Kumanoyama 熊の山 (Ryan), an ambitious young upstart and former university star. A strong, no-nonsense bruiser of a rikishi
• Kawa 川 (Mak), a mysterious orphan making a living however he can. He uses his speed and skill to dance around larger opponents
• Goniku 剛肉 (Flyric), the hungry (literally) veteran hoping to turn over a new leaf after bating his stablemates in a playoff for the Makushita yusho last month

*Spoilers through Day 8*

One more to go in 2019, so we head South to Fukuoka for the Kyushu basho. Plenty to talk about from the ever-shifting ozeki picture all the way down to an exciting juryo debut. We have an ad for some sumo audio books by the great author Charles Thickens at 1:10:26, give us a call at 805-613 SUMO (7866) to order!

Jake and Ryan discuss the implications of having 4 rikishi at the komusubi rank and try to explain, very poorly, how that affects Ryan's predicted banzuke. Share your honest praise with us at 805-613-SUMO (7866).

Check out the first two episodes of our new series, Dohyos & Deshis, where the GSB guys begin a role-playing adventure using the rules from the brand new sumo discord game, Road To Yokozuna! Make sure to check out both episodes (the split is at 31:30) and feel free to give us feedback. We had a ton of fun with this one and plan to release more soon!
