  • Episode #326 - Coravin New Model Two: Wine Like Never Before
They say that necessity is the mother of invention. Well, my first guest is to wine drinkers what Edison was to people who didn’t like being left in the dark. Greg Lambrecht is responsible for the most significant contribution to wine collecting, fine wine consumption and wine preservation in decades, and perhaps ever. Greg’s invention, the Coravin Wine Access System, has revolutionized wine enjoyment in remarkable ways by making it possible to remove any amount of wine you wish from a sealed bottle without so much as removing the foil and without jeopardizing the life of the wine that remains behind the cork seal. How does one accomplish such a feat? Well, leave it to a medical instruments innovator to find a non-invasive way to get into a bottle with unparalled ingenuity. The first Coravin hit the market a couple of years ago and its release was praised by everyone and anyone who has a reason to get into a bottle of wine but doesn’t want to consume it all in one sitting. And, after a couple of years of unbridled success, a new version of the Coravin has just been released and I have put it through its paces in a very big way. My impression? This latest release is kind of like a major operating system upgrade… without the bugs. So joining us now from Coravin Inc. headquarters in Burlington Mass, is the inventor himself, Greg Lambrecht, to shed plenty of light on how this breakthrough invention is allowing us to enjoy wine in a completely new light… which metaphorically speaking, makes him kind of the Thomas Edison of wine drinking.

  • Episode #325 - Let’s Not Sugarcoat the News About Vintage 2015
The most highly reported story from the wine industry this year is the harvest of 2015 and the impact the severe 4-year west coast drought has had on production. If you’re a wine enthusiast, chances are you don’t know who to believe. Some say the production is not off all that much, while grape growers in some regions report catastrophic losses and production down as much as 80%. Now while we always like to present stories in the most positive light, it just seems plain ridiculous to sugarcoat what is obvious to anyone that has an intimate connection with the wine biz… 2015 is shaping up to be an economic disaster. And beyond that, not all wine experts are convinced that there is a silver lining to the story. That is to say, despite low yields, the quality of wines is going to be exceptional. Because of the importance of this story, David has invited two world-class winemakers who he absolutely trusts to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth. If you want the facts rather than what some think you want to hear, then tune in as David welcomes wine rock stars Adam Lazarre and Wes Hagen who promise to tell it like it is regardless of how painful or pleasant the forecast is. Both Adam and Wes are associated with some of the finest brands in America and beyond, and though there’s a lot of bad news, the wine world is not likely to crumble like the parched soil in California as well as other regions of the world. Get the facts from the horses’ mouths on this week’s Grape Encounters Radio!

  • Episode #323 - Romancing the Vine - Harlequin Gets Into the Wine Business
Of course romance and wine go together, but did you know that Harlequin, one of the biggest names in romance, is putting out a line of wine? It’s called Vintages by Harlequin, by parent company Harper Collins Publishers, and on this show David talks with their consultant Deborah Brenner, Founder and President of the Women of the Vine Alliance, and author of the book, Women of the Vine. The publisher is partnering with Vintage Wine Estates in Santa Rosa, CA to create Vintages by Harlequin, three wines now available for $14.95 each on AmazonWIne.com. The winemaker is multi-award-winning Nancy Walker and the line is being marketed with the tagline, “Every bottle is crafted for a happy ending.” The three varietals are named Pardon My Body, Wild at Heart, and Substitute for Love, and feature vintage Harlequin titles and pulp-fiction art in their packaging. David and Deborah discuss the importance of women’s accomplishments in the wine industry, and the importance of women wine consumers, and how the tie between the strong women producers in the wine industry and the strong and bold Harlequin women heroines is a perfect fit. Then on Sipping with Sara, David & Sara talk Bordeaux varietals, and discuss the unsung varietals Merlot, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec, their histories and who is making the best of these wines today. If you haven’t tried these as single varietals, maybe it’s time you know what you’re missing!
