  • 017 - Bitching about Comics and the Eisners and Stuff

Our most musical episode to date begins with a poem and ends with a song.  In between our awe-inspiring moments of artistic expression, we reflect on Doc's blood alcohol level last episode, bid farewell to the girls over at the Green Up podcast, and share our opinions on Batman, board games, science, and some recent listener feedback.  Once we finally get around to talking about comics, we "rapidly" review Crossed Badlands #53, Grindhouse, Batman Eternal #5, Detective Comics #31, Alex + Ada #6, Fatale #22, Nailbiter #1, The Woods #1, All-New X-Factor #7, Black Widow #6, Cyclops #1, Iron Fist #2, Magneto #3, Moon Knight #3, Original Sin #1, Punisher #5, She-Hulk #4, B.A.R. Maids and Wynter #1 and 2.  We then turn our attention to the Eisner Comic Industry awards for 2014, and discuss the nominees in a few of the categories we're interested in.  As always, things get wrapped up with a look ahead to some of the books we're anticipating in the week to come, but as a special spring bonus, we close out the episode with a touching tribute song.

  • 016 - How The Grinch Stole Free Comic Book Day

We kick things off this episode with a discussion of Las Vegas, VF's aversion to free comic book day,  and a quick nod to mother's day. After clearing up some general conversation points left over from the week before, we proceed to our ironically named "Rapid Fire Review" segment.  This week we discuss Hacktivist #4, Batman Eternal #4, The Eltingville Club, Black Science #6, Deadly Class #4, Southern Bastards #1, Ten Grand #9, All-New X-Men #26, Amazing Spider-Man #1, Avengers #28, Hulk #2, New Avengers #17, Silver Surfer #2, Uncanny Avengers Annual #1, Wolverine #5, X-Force #4, and Origins II #5. Graphic Novice then welcomes its dedicated Equestria Correspondent, Brunellus, and we get an update on whats going on with My Little Pony these days before looking ahead to next week's books.

  • 015 - Batman and Lazarus and Belly Tattoos

The Graphic Novice Comic Book Podcast celebrates its 15th episode anniversary by recording a 15th episode.  We discuss lying and cheating our way onto a podcast network, our pending Musings of a Geek network belly tattoos, and tips on what to do with your dogs while youre away on a vacation.  Nickel humbly accepts credit for predicting the Death of Wolverine, VF purchases his first piece of original art, and Doc buys new hockey skates.  The "Rapid Fire Review" segment discusses Crossed, Peanuts #17, Witcher #2, All-Star Western #30, Batman Eternal #3, Dead Body Road #5, The Fuse #3, Lazarus #8, Protectors Inc. #6, Thief of Thieves #20, Fantastic Four #3, Guardians of the Galaxy #14, Original Sin #0, Uncanny Avengers #19, Bunker #3, and Evil Empire #2.  We finish off the episode with a look at some of the comments from the website.

  • 014 - Coffee & Comics: A Very Special Graphic Novice Engagment

Join the cast of Graphic Novice for a cup of coffee and an english muffin, as we spend the early hours of an otherwise tranquil Easter morning discussing the past week in comics.  After slapping on some fluffy bunny slippers, congratulating ourselves for sneaking onto the Musings of A Geek Podcast network and sending some holiday greetings to our friends, we embark on the slowest "Rapid-Fire Review" segment to date.  This week's books include Batman #30, Batman Eternal #2, Harley Quinn #5, Amazing X-Men #6, Hulk #1, Nova #16, Superior Spider-Man #31, Uncanny X-Men #20, Wolverine #4, Wolverine and the X-Men #3, X-Force #3, X-Men #13, and Bad Ass #4.  As a tribute to the "My Little Pony" segment that was postponed, Doc challenges the guys to a game of X-Men or Race-Horse before going over next week's books and retiring back to bed for a few hours.  All this and a little table top gaming talk, some game of thrones discussion, and a video game challenge that Nickel has no intention of living up to.  More comics, slightly less profanity...  This could be your new favorite episode mom!

  • 013 - Wizard World: Doc & VF's Erotic Adventure

After a brief but unfortunately necessary absence, the Graphic Novice Comic Book podcast returns, making their debut as a part of the Musings of a Geek network.  Doc’s out of rehab, VF’s out of jail, and everyone is ready to talk about some comics.  Friend of the show (and our vote for the world’s greatest Batman artist), Greg Capullo, sets the tone with the intro clip, and the guys do their best to live up to his expectations by keeping things as sexy as possible.  We tackle two weeks' worth of comics in Rapid-Fire Review this episode and discuss Wynter #1, Captain America #19, Grindhouse #7, Detective Comics #30, Black Science #5, Pretty Deadly #5, Inhuman #1, Magneto #2, Moon Knight #2, Punisher #4, She-Hulk #3, Starlight #2, Lumberjanes #1, East of West #11, All-New Doop #1, All-New Ghost Rider #2, Batman Eternal #1, All-New X-Factor #6, All-New X-Men #25, Daredevil #1.50, Iron Fist The Living Weapon #1, Deadpool #27, Nightcrawler #1 and Peter Panzerfaust #18.  The long list of unrapidly reviewed comics gets broken up with a few sordid tales of a comic book convention and two young men who lose their innocence, but find each other (in a mostly heterosexual manner).  Tune in for the 10 seconds of Capullo, and stick around for the 2 hours 31 minutes and 54 seconds of Graphic Novice.

  • 012 - In Contempt: Spotlight on The Trial of Jean Grey

More X-books!  Here at Graphic Novice we know how hard it is to get a good X-Men fix these days, so we've dedicated a good portion of this episode to reviewing the recent crossover between the All-New X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy.  Not to worry though, we wouldn't start our feature without warming everyone up first.  Doc shares some stories from campus, we offer some comic book speculation advice and send our condolences to the Graphic Novice band front-man after he gets his whip impounded (it's a mini-van).  We also thank the boys at the Green Up! Podcast for a review of the Witcher franchise, discuss our Top 5 comic book storylines as a tribute to The History of Bad Ideas Podcast, and thank New Worlds Comics for preview copies of Wynter #1 and Goof #1.  The slowest "Rapid-Fire Review" in the comic podcasting business then covers: The Bunker #2, Hacktivist #3, All-Star Western #29, Sandman Overture #2, Wraith Welcome To Christmasland #5, Alex + Ada #5, Deadly Class #3, Fatale #21, All-New Ghost Rider #1, Amazing X-Men #5, Hawkeye #18, Origin II #4, Silver Surfer #1, Superior Spider-Man #30, Uncanny Avengers #18, and Thaniel #1.  After naming our best and worst books of the week, we finally discuss and review the "Trial of Jean Grey" and VF finally admits to owning several pair of Rocket Racoon underwear.  With the 2-hour mark looming, we quickly list the new releases for the coming week and call it a night.  If you like stuff, this might just be the episode for you!  (Anyone still hoping to hear the next installments of Back-Issue Review please send request emails with the subject line: Doc Thirst is a Jerk.)

  • 011 - Bagged: Spotlight on Todd the Ugliest Kid on Earth

Comic book fans looking for an eloquant, well informed, and well-spoken podcast episode, focusing on the previous week in comics, can send us an email and we'll point you in the right direction.  Episode 11 of the Graphic Novice Comic Book Podcast cannot claim to be eloquant, but if you enjoy your comic reviews with a sack of affordable beers, a box of really cheap wine, and some baked beans, you've come to the right place.  After some random chatter and a few quick shout-outs to the only people on the internet who will still talk to us, we work our way through the ironically named "Rapid-Fire Review" segment, where we discuss Dead Body Road #2, Harley Quinn #4, The Fuse #2, Lazarus #7, Sex Criminals #5, Daredevil #1, Nova #15, Uncanny X-Men #19, Winter Soldier #2, Wolverine and the X-Men #2, and X-Men #12.  We conclude the segment with our votes for best and worst books of the week, then turn our focus to an in-depth review of the first four books of the Todd the Ugliest Kid on Earth series.  We finish up with a look at the pending week of comic releases, and wrap it all up after a solid 2 hours and 10 minutes of bridled comic book enthusiasm.

  • 010 - Ride On: The My Little Pony Episode

Episode 10 features nearly 3 hours of spicy Graphic Novice goodness.  After some quick shout-outs and a little bit of comic "news", we embark on our slowest "Rapid-Fire Review" segment yet, which flows almost seamlessly into the featured interview and a spotlight on My Little Pony.  Newly appointed Equestria correspondent, Brunellus, educates us on Bronies, Ponies, and the adrenaline filled world of competition knitting.  My Little Pony, East of West #10, and Batman #29 get some love, X-Force and X-Factor take some heat, and the guys hotly contest the merits of Hawkeye #17.  Critics are referring to this as the longest Graphic Novice episode to date and they're absolutely correct.

  • 009 - Breakdancing and Blood

After establishing our prolific breakdancing history, we offer our sincere thanks to Green Up, Brian Kearns, The History of Bad Ideas podcast, Brian Fietsam and Doc's Mom.  We then move on to the meat and potatoes of Episode 9 by slowly and casually making our way through a ”Rapid-Fire” Review of last week’s comics, and our first installment of Super-Easy Graphic Novice Comic Book Trivia.  Our books of the week segment focuses on the Jennifer Blood series and Moon Knight #1.  We finish things off by rushing through a quick look at the books coming out on March 12, and discussing what we have planned for our nest few episodes.  Early reviews have beamed "its probably not their worst episode".

  • 008 - Comics, Kids, Androids and Skrulls

Over 10 hours of raw audio trimmed and crimped into an airtight action-packed 2-hour episode. The show's first guest following the "All-New Graphic Novice Now" re-launch is Michael Whitehead, founder of the Comics for Kids initiative. Our thanks to Michael for slumming around with us long enough to tell us what his organization is all about and share some fantastic stories.  We bookend the episode with Rapid Fire Review and the Books of the Week segments.  Black Science, D4VE, and All-Star Western get some love in the Rapid Fire review, and we dig deep into Alex + Ada and The original Fantastic Four #2 from 1962 during Books of the Week.  Don’t miss out on the episode Doc's mom has referred to as an "emotional roller-coaster ride through the sociological fabric of the world we live in".
