  • Third Act Ohio w/ Jess Grim, Ted Wolner and Judy Smucker
Carolyn Harding with Jess Grim, Ted Wolner and Judy Smucker, organizers with Third Act Ohio, a branch of the national climate action organization for seniors, Third Act.
Jess Grim is Co-facilitator of Third Act Ohio. She's been involved in activism of various stripes for many years. Third Act - "over-60's" working to protect our climate and our democracy - came into existence at just the right time, as she recently retired and was looking for opportunities to engage actively with the fight to end fossil fuels and save our planet! Jess lives near Oberlin, in NE Ohio.
Ted Wolner is Chair of the Environmental Concerns Committee, at Kendal retirement community in Oberlin, Ohio. He’s Co-lead, of the Citizens Climate Lobby, Lorain County Chapter; and a member of the Coordinating Committee of Third Act OH.
Judy Smucker is a grandma who’s very concerned about the future our grandchildren are facing, and she has found it easy to find lots of “Good Trouble”. She feels lucky and very happy to have connected with Jess and Ted, when they were active at the Manchin Coal Baron Blockade. And when she heard they were starting a ThirdAct OH group, it sounded like a great idea. She’s fortunate to have friends who share her love the earth, and do all they can to protest the crimes against nature that are occurring. Judy is from Athens, Ohio.
You All took part in the Tuesday, March 21, 2023, “Rocking Chair Rebellion”, according to the NYTimes, where more than 100 climate actions were staged across the country by Third Act, a protest group for people aged 60 and older, co-founded by Bill McGibbon, the writer and climate campaigner. Why You? Why Now?

    Welcome to GrassRoot Ohio.
It’s the winter solstice, the longest nights of the year, and we’re heading into freezing rain and snow. A few days ago, early morning, I was having coffee and I heard a sound out towards my backyard and neighbors behind us, I thought it could be a Canadian goose or a hurt animal crying or a maybe even person? I opened my door and listened - it was someone crying/weeping. “Do you need help? Silence. Are you ok? Silence. Are you there? I waited. Nothing. I went back to my couch, my candle and my coffee, and I thought of the people you serve- outside, cold, unsheltered, without support, hot coffee, food, comfort.

  • Radioactive Ohio House Bill 434 w/ Pat Marida and Lee Blackburn
Carolyn Harding with Pat Marida and Lee Blackburn coordinators of the Ohio Nuclear Free Network. They are highly concerned with the current Ohio HB 434, and we’ll learn what it’s about and what we can do about it.
Pat Marida has been an antinuclear activist since the 1980s, when she was a Board Member of the Ohio Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign. For 25 years she held volunteer positions with the Sierra Club, working on environmental issues and chairing the Ohio Sierra Club Nuclear Free Committee. She is currently a Coordinator with the Ohio Nuclear Free Network.
Lee Blackburn is one of the founding members of the Ohio Nuclear Free Network and is currently working to oppose Ohio House Bill 434, a senseless bill that provides no benefits but could saddle the State with billions in losses. He is a former Chief Investment Officer for a major real estate concern that invested some $3 billion in low to moderate income housing under his purview. He became concerned about radioactive materials and its deadly legacy after becoming familiar with the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in southern Ohio where uranium was initially enriched to weapons-grade. Beginning in 1991, until its relegation to Cold Standby in 2001, PORTS, or the A-plant as it’s locally known, supplied low-enriched uranium for nuclear reactors. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Senator Sherrod Brown, The Department of Energy was required in 2008 to establish a community-based Site Specific Advisory Board to make recommendations to the Department Of Energy on clean-up efforts at the Site. Mr. Blackburn served as one of the founding members and still attends Board meetings to provide testimony as a private citizen.
Ohio HB Bill 434 is relatively short, only 14 pages and YET this Bill is “Massive in Scope” -
What’s in it, and why you are so concerned?
