Today on the podcast, I’m joined by Mark Drane, a certified business coach in West Michigan. His goal is to inspire, engage, and develop business owners, and their top talent, to meet the challenges that lie ahead. In essence, helping to do business better.
Today’s conversation is organic because Mark and I are friends and colleagues. Today is November 3, 2020. It is Election Day in the United States. So we might have a little fun about that, too.
A Conversation with Mark Drane
Kandas RodarteHi, Mark. Welcome to the show.
Mark DraneHi, thank you. Thank you for having me on. This is exciting.
Kandas RodarteIt is exciting. It’s not really November 3, it’s actually the middle of October, but this episode is dropping on November 3. I don’t know if we should predict anything. But I do know that it’s time for people to really start thinking about what comes next. There might be some business owners out there who are thinking about that song by The Clash:
“Should I stay or should I go now? Should I stay or should I go now?”
Is it time for business owners to start thinking about quitting? Or is pivoting a better solution? I mean, what do you think? You’re working with businesses right now? What are you telling your business clients to do?
Mark DraneIt is a great topic, I have to say. It was a topic that I sought to address right at the beginning of the pandemic way back in March, which seems, I don’t know, how many lifetimes ago, and I’m sure many of your listeners feel the same about that.
I’m really just trying to address that question about time to pivot in your business. And what does that even mean? You know, there was a lot of talk about pivoting. And it became almost cliche at one point. But really, you know, what, what does that mean, for any business to pivot?
I came across a great short definition of what it means to pivot. And it was this: a change in strategy without a change in vision, which I think is is awesome. A change in strategy without a change in vision, that essentially, is what a pivot is.
I don’t know if any of your listeners read a great deal. But there have been a number of things written about pivoting.
A pivot is a change in strategy without a change in vision.
Zagging is another term that has come up and this year, and what does it mean to zag. So if any of your listeners are familiar with Michael Hyatt, he writes a great piece* about zagging and zag is something completely different. Zagging really takes you away from your vision. So it’s either a new vision, a different vision, recognizing that your current vision no longer serves you or your model. So that’s a much bigger and a much greater change, than a pivot, which could really just be changing the way you do things in terms of your strategy and your approach, at those times when it’s right to do that.
*It’s actually in the book The Vision Driven Leader.
The Vision Driven Leader by Michael Hyatt
Kandas RodarteZagging is also not a bad thing to think about doing at this time. Especially if you want to continue to be self-employed or continue to be a micropreneur, but you don’t think that your current business model is going to work. So I would love to hear about this. Tell me more.
Mark DraneSure.
